Great Hero’s Trial is the early Wandering Tale tied to Rongrong in Where Winds Meet. It plays out as a self-contained puzzle near the starting region, and it’s easy to miss one objective or get stuck looking for the last “hero tag” (the stone tablets from each trial).
The quest is short, but it assumes you will read the clues and explore on your own. Here is how to start it, where each objective is, and what you actually get for helping Rongrong.
Where to start the Rongrong quest (Great Hero’s Trial)
Rongrong and Great Hero’s Trial sit just east of the game’s opening area, in Bamboo Abode.
| Step | Action | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fast travel to Bamboo Abode | The main waypoint in the eastern starter area |
| 2 | Head east toward the coast | A tall waterfall pouring down from the cliffs |
| 3 | Drop to the lower ground | Use Mighty Drop if you want to avoid fall damage |
| 4 | Face the waterfall and look left | A small, shaded shrine tucked into the cliff |
| 5 | Enter the shrine | Rongrong, the child NPC, standing in front of the altar |
Talk to Rongrong to accept the Great Hero’s Trial. She gives three riddles, one for each “hero tag” she wants:
- Fell the thickest tree.
- Hunt the highest bird.
- Climb the ladderless tower.
Each objective is very close to the shrine, but the game provides no on-screen markers. You’re expected to correlate the clues with the local landscape.
How to fell “the thickest tree”
The first trial is the simplest and fastest to clear.
| Direction from shrine | Landmark | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Left, toward the waterfall | One large non-bamboo tree near the water | Attack the trunk with melee until it collapses |
Stand inside the shrine, face outward, then turn left so you’re looking toward the waterfall. Walk a short distance and you’ll see a single broad tree that is not bamboo. Everything else around here is bamboo, so the thicker trunk stands out immediately.
Walk up and strike the tree with any melee combo. After a few hits, it will topple and drop the first stone tablet “tag” for Rongrong. Pick it up before you move on.
How to hunt “the highest bird”
The second trial pushes you to the highest cliff in the local area.
| Step | Direction from shrine | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Face the waterfall, then look right | Identify the tallest rocky peak rising above the treeline |
| 2 | Climb up past the waterfall | Use normal climbing and lightness skills to reach the high ground |
| 3 | Head toward the highest boulder, not the long ridge | A distinct, tall rock formation a bit away from the falls |
| 4 | Scan the sky around the summit | A white bird circling at this high altitude |
When you reach the summit, equip your bow. The white bird flies in a predictable loop around the peak.
- Enter Still Waters mode with your bow for a slowed, precision shot.
- Wait for the bird to fly into a comfortable angle, then shoot it once.
Loot the fallen bird to get the second tablet. If you miss, the bird will keep circling, so you can repeat until you land the shot.
How to climb “the ladderless tower”
The last trial is about movement skills rather than combat.
| Direction from shrine | Landmark | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Right, along the shoreline | Wooden watchtower near a worn-down house | Reach the tower platform without any ladder |
From the shrine, walk out, turn right, and follow the coast. A short run later, you’ll spot a simple wooden lookout tower beside a small, run-down building. There’s no ladder leading up, which is the whole point of the trial.
The climb solution relies on your aerial jumps:
- Start from the ground near the tower’s base.
- Use a triple jump to reach the slightly protruding plank or the tower edge.
- From there, use two more double jumps or careful movement to pull yourself up onto the main platform.
The collision on the upper frame is forgiving. You can land slightly short and still catch the edge, so don’t overthink the exact angle. Once you stand on the top platform, the third hero tag/tablet becomes available to collect.

Turning in all hero tags to Rongrong
After completing all three conditions, you should have:
- One tablet from the felled tree.
- One tablet from the highest bird.
- One tablet from the tower platform.
Return to the shrine and talk to Rongrong again. A “Give” interaction appears that lets you hand over the proof of each trial. When you do, Great Hero’s Trial completes, and the Wandering Tale entry resolves.
| Reward | Amount | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Echo Jade | 40 | Wandering Tales rewards screen |
| Qinghe Exploration points | 10 | Region exploration level for Qinghe |
| Character EXP | 5000 | Character level progress |
| Five Dynasties Coins | 5000 | General currency |
You can claim these from the Wandering Tales section of the Journal once the quest is marked complete. Rongrong’s story hints at a “Secret Tome,” but the immediate payout is a straightforward bundle of currency, experience, and regional progress rather than a unique combat manual.
As an early Wandering Tale, Great Hero’s Trial serves mainly as a tutorial in reading environmental clues, using lightness skills creatively, and paying attention to elevation. Clearing it quickly also gives a small but useful boost to your Qinghe exploration rank, which feeds into other rewards later in the region.
