Winter Burrow: How to Reach Pinesap and Finish Moss’s Story

Pinesap sits at the emotional center of Moss’s storyline in Winter Burrow. You hear about them long before you ever see a trace, and the game never highlights the route with a big quest marker. Instead, you piece it together through Moss’s quests, a handful of items, and a late‑game trip into the pines.

If you’re trying to work out where Pinesap actually is, or how to close out Moss’s quests and the Moss Moves On achievement, the entire chain breaks down into a few clear stages.

Moss quests that lead toward Pinesap

Before you can reach Pinesap’s location, Moss has to pull you through several quests. These are story‑gated: you meet Moss once you have a basic pickaxe, then return later after rescuing your Aunty.

To get to the final stage, you must also finish Bufo’s questline so you can craft the top‑tier pickaxe. Without that, the rocks guarding Pinesap’s final area cannot be cleared.

Reaching Moss and collecting snow fox fur tufts

Moss becomes accessible once you help Bufo for the first time and earn a basic pickaxe.

• From your burrow, walk north and break the three rocks blocking the path.
• Follow the route into the new area and take the first left fork to reach Moss’s tent.

Moss’s first job, “Find Signs of Pinesap,” sends you hunting for three snow fox fur tufts in Shadow Pines. These are small white clumps lying in the snow and are easy to overlook.

• Return to the fork near Moss’s area and go north into a larger open zone.
• Head toward the top‑right of this area and check near the rocks for the first tuft.
• The second and third tufts sit a bit further north from there, still in the same snowy expanse.

Bring all three tufts back to Moss to move the story forward and unlock the next objective, “A Missing Key.”

Finding the heavy key tied to Pinesap

The heavy key is your first concrete object linked to Pinesap, but it’s nowhere near Moss’s campsite. The trail leads back to the darker forest around Gnawtusk, the squirrel.

There are two slightly different route descriptions that converge on the same outcome:

• From Gnawtusk’s camp, move into the darker zone using your lantern.
• Look for a narrow, dim corridor leading from a small entry clearing down into a larger, shadowy area.
• In one description, you travel down and then left until you meet thorny plants. Cut them with the axe tier you have at that point (the Graphite/Flint line handles thorns).
• Keep heading north beyond these thorns; in a small side pocket, you find a skull with branches, and the heavy key lies there.

Pick up the key and return to Moss. Moss refuses to open Pinesap’s parlour until their friend comes back, which pauses this storyline until you progress further with Aunty.

Using Aunty’s shawl and the mushroom stew to unlock the best axe

The next step is gated behind rescuing Aunty and building planters for her. After that point, speak to her in your repaired burrow, and she gives you a shawl meant for Moss, triggering “Bring Moss Their Old Shawl.”

• Take the shawl up north to Moss’s tent and speak with them.
• Moss responds to the memory of Aunty by handing you a recipe for a mushroom healing stew and some mushroom seeds.

The stew for “Cooking A Healing Stew For Aunty” requires all four mushroom types in Winter Burrow:

You can harvest all four from the basement if you’ve cleared the stairs and planted the seeds, or gather them outdoors where they naturally spawn.

Cook the stew at your stove and bring it to Aunty. After eating it, she feels strong enough to reward you with a blueprint for the Flint axe, which is the high‑tier axe needed for the dense vines and plants in later areas. Craft this axe at your woodworking bench so you are ready for the next stage of the Pinesap search.

Where to find Pinesap’s shawl

With Aunty recovered and the new axe in hand, Moss sets you a new task: “Find More Signs Of Pinesap.” The goal this time is to find Pinesap’s shawl in the northern woods beyond Moss’s camp.

The route is a layered series of screens and forks:

• From Moss’s tent, leave via the north exit into the larger Shadow Pines area where you first gathered snow fox fur.
• In that area, work your way toward the northwest top corner and take the exit leading north.
• In the next zone, you hit a fork. Take the left path to another small area.
• Use your axe to cut through the thin, thorny vines blocking the way and follow the left fork again.
• At a third fork, choose the left path once more. This leads to an abandoned cart tucked into the trees.

Near this cart, thick green vines block an exit. Cut those with your upgraded axe and move into the area beyond. There, at the end of the trail, lies Pinesap’s shawl on the ground.

Pick up the shawl and bring it back to Moss. Moss responds with new clothing blueprints and one final step: “It’s Time To Find Pinesap.”

Preparing the best pickaxe before you look for Pinesap directly

Moss’s last request assumes you already have the most powerful pickaxe, unlocked at the end of Bufo’s storyline. If you try to push further toward Pinesap without that tool, rocks will hard‑lock the route.

Bufo’s questline eventually culminates in a baking job and a key hand‑off:

• Bufo asks you to bake a Blackberry Pie and a Rowanberry Pie.
• Blackberries grow around his home; some sit on the ground, others drop from small trees.
• Elderberries grow near your burrow and combine with Blackberries to make Forest Jam in the stove.
• Blueberries appear in the area near Gnawtusk; Rowanberries sit behind rocks to the left of your home and require a pickaxe to access.
• Rowanberry Pie needs Wild Jam, cooked from Blueberries and Rowanberries.
• Grab some Hazelnuts while collecting Rowanberries; they are used in Hazelnut cookies for the pie recipe.

Once both pies are baked and delivered to Bufo, he hands you a key that you must carry to Pollywog. After reporting back, Bufo’s quests close out, and you gain access to the blueprint for the top‑tier pickaxe. Craft that at your bench so you can finally break the rocks guarding Pinesap.

Where Pinesap actually is and how to reach them

With the best pickaxe and Flint‑line axe equipped, you can finally follow Moss’s last lead and reach Pinesap’s resting place. Everything starts back at the spot where you found the shawl near the abandoned cart.

• Travel north from Moss to Shadow Pines, then up and left until you reach the abandoned cart area again.
• Head to the same exit you used when you first collected Pinesap’s shawl.
• On the left side of this follow‑on area, a wall of rocks blocks another passage.
• Use the top‑tier pickaxe unlocked through Bufo to mine these rocks and open the route.
• Move into the newly opened zone and follow the path to the end.

At the end of this path, you find Pinesap. There’s no dialogue choice, no way to change what happened; this is simply the reveal of their fate. Next to Pinesap lies a pendant.

• Pick up the pendant on the ground beside Pinesap.
• Return to Moss’s tent one last time and speak with them.

Handing over the pendant gives Moss the closure they have been waiting for. The final conversation completes the “It’s Time To Find Pinesap” quest and unlocks the Moss Moves On achievement.

How Pinesap’s story fits into the late game

Once Moss’s questline is finished, the broader late‑game loop opens up: Willow’s final requests, Aunty’s house repair, and the closing dinner all sit downstream of the tools and confidence you gain in the Pinesap search.
