YAPYAP Monster Bestiary — Every Enemy and How to Survive Them

YAPYAP's tower is packed with monsters that punish careless positioning far more than they reward brute-force combat. Because the game is voice-controlled, even the act of casting a spell can attract unwanted attention. Knowing what each enemy does — and which wand counters it — is the difference between extracting safely and losing an entire run.

Quick answer: YAPYAP currently has ten confirmed monster types: Goblins, Guards, Headless Guards, the Jester, the Eye, the Slime, the Spider, the Mimic, Gargoyles, and the Time Ghost. Most can be neutralized with the right wand spell or by breaking line of sight, but the Time Ghost and Jester have no reliable combat counter — you simply run or extract.

Goblins

Goblins are individually weak but spawn in large groups, especially on later floors. Their real danger is swarming you in tight corridors where stacked damage adds up fast. Some variants carry weapons — armed Goblins can steal whatever item you're holding in your main hand and vanish with it permanently if you don't chase them down in time. Bomb-carrying Goblins will throw explosives, though you can pick those bombs up with E and lob them right back.

The Wand of Winds is the cleanest counter. Casting Aero pushes the swarm back and creates breathing room without needing to kill anything. If you have the Grotesque Wand, Fish-Yuk transforms Goblins into fish that can be picked up and hurled off a ledge into the abyss. Even without a nearby edge, the transformation buys enough time to reposition. For point farming, Piss-Yuk (also Grotesque Wand) scores hits repeatedly without instantly killing them, making Goblins the best enemy for building Chaos toward your quota.

Guards (Red Knights)

Red Knight Guards hit hard enough to kill you in two strikes, and they become especially lethal when other monsters are active in the same room. They move slowly and have clumsy pathfinding — they cannot climb over obstacles — so looping around furniture, walls, and elevation changes is the safest way to keep distance.

Guards are attracted to voice noise. Loud mic input, whether from spell casting or just talking, can pull them toward you unexpectedly. Stay quiet near them whenever possible. Knocking a Guard's helmet off earns bonus Chaos points, but disengage immediately afterward.

The Wand of Illusions offers the strongest toolkit against Guards. Float Oculus lets you possess a Guard and physically move it out of the way — or turn it against other monsters. Echo Me creates a decoy duplicate of yourself that distracts Guards long enough for an escape. Fish-Yuk works on Guards too, but the fish transformation is short-lived, so treat it as a quick reset rather than a permanent solution.

Headless Guards

Headless Guards behave similarly to their helmeted counterparts — two hits will still down you — but they swing faster and move noticeably quicker. The same spatial strategies apply: use terrain to loop around them, avoid voice noise, and hide in cabinets (press E) to reset aggro if things get desperate. Because of their increased speed, the margin for error is much smaller, so prioritize creating distance over trying to farm points from them.

The Jester

The Jester is one of the most dangerous enemies in YAPYAP. It moves extremely fast and can instantly kill you on contact. When you spot or hear it, the only reliable response is to immediately break line of sight and run. Engaging it in combat is not practical for most loadouts.

If you have the Wand of Illusions, the Shrinkana spell can shrink the Jester down to a tiny size, at which point you can pick it up and throw it off a cliff. Hiding inside a cabinet with E also resets its aggro — it will walk right past. Beyond those options, treat the Jester as a "flee on sight" enemy.

The Eye

The Eye functions like a stationary turret. It cannot move, but it fires a damaging beam that shreds health quickly if you stay exposed. It tends to spawn in cramped areas where dodging is difficult.

Breaking line of sight is the only reliable counter. Ducking behind a wall, pillar, or corner completely disables its attack. Once you hide, the Eye disappears after a few seconds, though it will likely respawn later in the run. The real threat is distraction — while you're focused on avoiding the Eye's beam, other monsters can close in from behind. If the Eye appears during a chaotic fight, reposition first before dealing with anything else. Fish-Yuk technically works on it, but the transformation window is so short that it's rarely worth the risk.

The Slime

The Slime is a slow-moving gelatinous cube that deals minimal direct damage. Getting trapped inside it, however, drastically reduces your movement speed and turns you into an easy target for every other monster in the room. Slimes become genuinely dangerous when they park themselves on staircases, in narrow hallways, or directly in front of your extraction route.

The Piss-Yuk spell with the Grotesque Wand is the fastest way to destroy a Slime. Maintaining a steady flow of voice input increases the spell's output, which speeds up the kill. One critical detail: the Slime cannot be turned into a fish. Fish-Yuk simply does not work on it, so don't waste the cooldown trying. The best general strategy is to never let a Slime get between you and an exit.

Spider

The Spider is one of the most feared monsters in the tower, and the recommended approach is avoidance whenever possible. Listen for scuttling sounds — that audio cue is your earliest warning. If you hear it, slow down and check corners carefully before advancing.

When avoidance fails, the Wand of Fire is the best offensive option. Ignis Breath and Ignis Doom deal solid damage, but the most valuable spell in a Spider encounter is Ignis Legs, which gives you a speed boost to outrun it. Fish-Yuk can transform the Spider into a fish, but the duration is extremely short — use those seconds purely to escape, and do not attempt to pick the fish up.

Mimic

Mimics disguise themselves as you or a teammate, making them easy to fall for when the team is already under pressure. Once you identify one — typically because it behaves oddly or appears where no teammate should be — Mimics are relatively straightforward to kill. Most damage-dealing spells work well against them.

Fish-Yuk is a clean option here. Turn the Mimic into a fish, pick it up, and throw it off the nearest ledge. If no edge is available, fire spells from the Wand of Fire burn it down quickly.

Gargoyles

Gargoyles begin as ordinary-looking statues scattered around the map and spring to life without warning. The biggest threat is the jump scare itself — if you're already managing other enemies, a sudden Gargoyle activation can throw off your positioning badly.

Treat every Gargoyle statue as potentially hostile. Keep distance, stay ready, and use Fish-Yuk to transform them into fish for an easy ledge toss if the map geometry allows it. In isolation, Gargoyles are not particularly tough, but their surprise factor makes them dangerous in combination with other threats.

Time Ghost

The Time Ghost is not a conventional enemy — it is the game's fail-state. When the countdown timer in the top-left corner of the screen reaches zero, the Time Ghost spawns and instantly kills every player still on the map. There is no spell, no counter, and no escape. The entire area fills with light blue, and if the ghost reaches you, the run is over.

The only way to deal with the Time Ghost is to extract before time expires. Always monitor the timer, and when it drops below 60 seconds, stop chasing points and head for the extraction tower. Players who fail to extract also incur a penalty against the team's Chaos quota, so dying to the Time Ghost actively hurts the entire group.

General Monster Survival Tips

Most deaths in YAPYAP come from bad positioning, not from enemies being too strong. A few habits dramatically improve survival across all monster encounters.

  • Always keep an exit path open. Never push into a dead-end room without confirming you can get back out.
  • Use walls and corners aggressively. Breaking line of sight neutralizes the Eye, buys time against Guards, and disrupts the Jester's chase.
  • Hide in cabinets by pressing E to instantly reset enemy aggro when things spiral out of control.
  • Control your mic noise. Guards and potentially other sound-sensitive enemies react to voice input, so stay quiet when you don't need to cast.
  • Flying potions are a universal escape tool. Drinking one lets you fly over enemies, bypass blocked staircases, and reach extraction safely when ground routes are compromised.
  • Never ignore the timer. The Time Ghost ends runs instantly, and no amount of Chaos points is worth the extraction penalty.

YAPYAP's monster roster rewards players who learn enemy behavior patterns rather than those who try to fight everything head-on. Keeping the right wand equipped for the floor you're on — particularly the Grotesque Wand for Fish-Yuk and the Wand of Illusions for Guards — gives you options that raw damage alone cannot match.
