Meteor Shower timing and how to find craters

Meteor Showers can begin any time from Day 5 onward. When it’s about to start, a global alert appears: “The sky is on fire.” The sky turns deep red and bright trails mark incoming impacts. Those trails matter—spin the camera, fix a landmark in that direction, and move quickly.

Meteor craters are not marked on the map. You’ll need to locate them by sight and sound, following where trails end and scanning for scorched ground and smoking craters. If you miss an impact, sweep the nearby area; craters persist until mined.

Expect hostiles at crash sites. Meteor Crabs and wolves often patrol the rim—clear them before you mine so you’re not interrupted mid‑swing.

Mine meteors efficiently (axes, sacks, and safety)

Mining meteors works like chopping trees, but the nodes are tougher and take more hits. Bring an axe tier you’re comfortable swinging for a while and a sack that can carry multiple stacks. Meteors appear in two visual types—Black Ore and Red Crystal—but they drop the same materials.

Category Options
Axes (for mining) Old Axe, Good Axe, Ice Axe, Strong Axe, Chainsaw, Admin Axe
Sacks (for storage) Old Sack, Good Sack, Infernal Sack, Giant Sack

Workflow on site: scout the crater edge, eliminate Meteor Crabs and wolves, then mine from a stable position so drops don’t scatter out of reach. Deposit materials into your sack after each node to stay light for the next crater.

Meteor drops and what they’re used for

Both meteor types can yield three core resources. Meteor Shards are most common; Gold Shards are the rarest of the trio.

Item Primary use Notes
Meteor Shard Crafts at the Meteor Anvil (e.g., trims, Obsidiron chest) Common drop; needed in bulk
Raw Obsidiron Ore Refine into Obsidiron Ingots Requires a three‑step process
Gold Shard Higher‑tier recipes and upgrades Rarer than Meteor Shards

Obsidiron refining loop:

  • Break the Raw Obsidiron Ore by dropping it from a height.
  • Toss the broken pieces into lava to create Scalding Obsidiron.
  • Quench in cold water to finalize an Obsidiron Ingot.
Tip: Use lava and water near the crater to process quickly without long trips.

Find and assemble the Meteor Anvil (the anvil building)

After a Meteor Shower, the anvil building appears on the map as an anvil icon. It’s outside the volcano and can spawn damaged. Inside, three Meteor Crabs typically guard the area. Clear them, then assemble the anvil by placing its parts onto the highlighted platform. The base sits on the first floor; the upper pieces are on floors two and three.

Once assembled, interact to open the Meteor Anvil’s workshop. You can craft new gear and apply trims. Beyond the Obsidiron chest, the anvil supports upgrades like Axe Trim for better damage and armor‑oriented trims for defense.

Craft Cost Effect
Axe Trim Kit 8 Meteor Shards, 3 Gold Shards Improves a selected axe and applies a golden trim

Craft the Obsidiron chest (recipe variants and rewards)

The Obsidiron chest blueprint is crafted at the Meteor Anvil. Place the required items on the anvil, craft the blueprint, then place the blueprint in the world to spawn the chest. Opening the chest grants a unique badge and typically drops high‑tier rewards such as diamonds, Blue Flame boosts, and a themed weapon.

Observed recipe costs vary between servers/updates. Check the anvil menu in your session to confirm the requirement.

Recipe variant Meteor Shards Gold Shards Obsidiron Ingots Notes
Lower-cost variant 10 5 3 Common in some lobbies
Higher-cost variant 20 15 10 Seen after recent updates
Note: Because costs can differ, it’s efficient to stockpile extra shards and ingots before you trek to the anvil.

Event badges tied to the Meteor Anvil update

Badge Requirement Practical tip
Obsidian Chest Badge Craft and open the Obsidiron chest Farm shards early so you can craft as soon as you find the anvil
Crab Slayer Badge Defeat 20 Meteor Crabs Kite in circles; lean on ranged hits to avoid burst damage
Meteor Miner Badge Mine 25 meteors Use Strong Axe or Chainsaw and a large sack to speed up runs
Meteor Craftsman Badge Craft 5 items at the Meteor Anvil Start with lower‑cost recipes to progress quickly

Fast farming setup and common pitfalls

If your goal is speed, prioritize gear and route. A Strong Axe or Chainsaw reduces swings per node. An Infernal or Giant Sack cuts return trips. Running with friends lets you clear Meteor Crabs instantly and hold the crater while someone mines.

  • Move immediately when “The sky is on fire” appears; fresh craters are quickest to work.
  • Don’t skip refining steps—break ore, heat in lava, then quench in water—unfinished ingots won’t count for recipes.
  • Drop Raw Obsidiron from a meaningful height; too low and it may not fracture properly.
  • Mind your footing near lava; standing too close can cost you the ingot and the run.

The loop is straightforward once you’ve seen it: chase the meteor trails, secure the crater, mine hard, refine on-site, then head to the anvil to convert materials into real progress. Keep your best axe and a big sack on you after Day 5, and you’ll be ready the moment the sky turns red.
