College Football 27: Best One-Star Schools for a Dynasty Rebuild

The lowest-rated programs to take over if you want a true rags-to-riches project in Dynasty Mode.

The lowest-rated programs to take over if you want a true rags-to-riches project in Dynasty Mode.

Dynasty Mode rewards patience most when you pick a program that has almost nothing going for it. The one-star (and half-star) schools in College Football 27 come with thin rosters, weak facilities, and grades that scare off top recruits, which is exactly why they make the most satisfying long-term rebuilds. If you want the biggest swing from bottom-feeder to contender, these are the teams to start with.

Quick answer: Take over UL Monroe for the hardest possible rebuild (rated 0 stars, 62 OVR), or drop to Southern Miss or UMass at half a star if you want a near-zero start with slightly more roster to work with.

Lowest-rated schools to pick in College Football 27 Dynasty Mode

Every team below is a long-term project. You will have to handle recruiting, roster development, and program grades yourself, and progress will be slow in the first couple of seasons. The list runs from a zero-star program up through the one-star tier, with the overall (OVR), offense (OFF), and defense (DEF) ratings for each.

SchoolStarsOVR/OFF/DEFWhy it’s a rebuild
UL Monroe062/61/64The single hardest start. A zero-rated roster with just seven draft picks in its history and a poor 2025 record, though it does have one of the fastest athletes in the game.
Southern Miss Golden Eagles0.569/69/69A near-70 squad rating is decent for this tier, and 116 all-time NFL draft picks helps. The problem is program grades — five categories sit at F, with a C as the high mark.
UMass Minutemen0.566/66/66You inherit a team coming off an 0-12 season. Little NIL money, a bare stadium, and a northern location that makes recruiting harder.
FLA Atlantic Owls172/71/74A thin history of just eight NFL draftees. The roster is average, and Campus Lifestyle is the only grade worth building around.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers166/66/66One of the lowest-rated lineups in the game, but average grades leave a little room to negotiate with recruits.
Liberty Flames172/74/71The roster is respectable for one star, but double F grades in Academic Prestige and Brand Exposure make recruiting a grind.
Kennesaw St. Owls166/64/69A poor roster plus F grades in Athletic Facilities and Academic Prestige means most top prospects will pass on you.
Sacramento State Hornets171/71/71A clean 0-0 start in 2025 and a B- in Coach Stability buys you a long leash, but you’ll still need to recruit and win hard.

Teams rated 1.5 stars are left off on purpose. There are plenty of tougher options at one star and below, so the schools above give you the steepest, most rewarding climb.

How to choose between them

Ratings only tell part of the story. Two factors decide how painful a rebuild really is: recruiting location and program grades. A low OVR can be fixed in a few classes, but bad grades and a poor talent region slow down everything you try to do.

  • Pick UL Monroe for the purest challenge. A zero-star team sitting in Louisiana at least gives you nearby hometown talent to pull from, even if NIL money is scarce.
  • Pick UMass if you want the coldest possible start. An 0-12 record and a northeastern location that offers little local talent make it one of the toughest recruiting situations in the game.
  • Pick Southern Miss or FLA Atlantic if you value one usable grade. Southern Miss brings a strong NFL pedigree, and FAU’s Campus Lifestyle grade gives you something to sell recruits on.
  • Pick Sacramento State for a clean slate. The 0-0 record and solid Coach Stability grade mean less immediate pressure while you build.

Note: Program grades feed directly into recruiting in CFB 27. Schools carrying F marks in Academic Prestige, Athletic Facilities, or Brand Exposure will see more prospects turn them down, so plan to spend early Dynasty resources on lifting those grades before chasing four- and five-star talent.

Build your own low-rated team

If none of the official one-star programs scratch the itch, the Team Builder lets you create a custom school and stadium from scratch, then drop it into Dynasty for a fully personalized rebuild. You can find the Team Builder on the official EA Sports College Football hub.

Whichever program you land on, treat the first two or three seasons as foundation-building rather than a title run. Fix the weakest grades, lock down whatever local talent you can afford, and the worst rosters in the game slowly turn into something you actually want to coach.
