Canyne in Monster Hunter Stories 3: How to Unlock It and What It's Weak To

The Canyne is a 5-star Fanged Beast Monstie in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, and it's not something you'll stumble across in a random Monster Den. It's an endangered species tied directly to the main story — specifically the Canalta Timberland arc, and it's the first Monstie that grants access to the Ground Dive riding action, which opens up underground passages you can't reach any other way.

Quick answer: You obtain the Canyne egg by repelling the Invasive Arzuros at Blessing Hill during Chapter 13 (Ward). Once it retreats, enter its den, collect the egg, and return to Sheparden for the hatching ceremony. The Canyne then joins your Monstie party automatically.

How to get the Canyne egg

The Canyne egg becomes available during the "Transgressors" / "Ward" chapter of the main story. After arriving at the village of Sheparden and speaking with Kol, Eleanor proposes finding Canyne eggs to restore the village's dwindling ward population. Kol points you toward Blessing Hill in the southern part of Canalta Timberland.

Step 1: Fast travel to the Cataract Catavan Stand at Blessing Hill. Head southeast up the hills, then veer left toward the waterfall that feeds into the lake. Be careful — a Feral Tobi Kadachi patrols this area.

Step 2: Follow the river path toward the waterfall. Rudy will notice the Endemic Life behaving strangely, which signals an Invasive Monster nearby. When prompted, choose to advance to nighttime. Invasive Monsters only appear at night.

Step 3: Save at the Catavan Stand ahead, then approach the cliff. A cutscene reveals the Invasive Arzuros below, along with glowing track sets. Collect as many tracks as possible before it spots you — use a breath attack from the back corner near the tree to distract it if needed.

Step 4: Battle the Invasive Arzuros. The goal is not to deal damage to it directly but to force it to exhaust its honey supply. Focus your attacks on the regular Arzuros minions it summons. Each time you defeat one, the Invasive Arzuros spends honey to call another. It also uses honey for its devastating Invasive Honey Rush attack, which hits your entire party for over 100 damage per hit. Prioritize survival and keep your party healed.

Step 5: Once Rudy says it's running out of honey, you're close. The Invasive Arzuros will attempt one final honey attack, realize it's empty, and flee. An Endangered Den opens up. Enter it, sneak past the sleeping Arzuros inside, and interact with the Egg Quartz to collect the Canyne egg.

⚠️
Explore the surrounding area before entering the den — you'll be sent straight back to Sheparden after picking up the egg. Grab the blue treasure chest nearby for the Epitaph Blade Recipe (a Dragon-type Great Sword) before going in.

Step 6: Back in Sheparden, a hatching ceremony plays out. The Canyne hatches and joins your Monstie party through the cutscene. You can then add it to your active roster at the Stables.

Getting more Canyne eggs later

Because the Canyne is classified as an endangered species, it doesn't appear in regular Monster Dens. After the initial story acquisition, additional Canyne eggs can occasionally be found in Monster Dens during your travels. The species can also be reintroduced to the wild through the Habitat Restoration system, which may make encounters more frequent over time.

Riding ActionsJump, Melee Attack, Wall Climb, Roar, Ground Dive

Ground Dive is the standout ability here. It lets you drop into underground passages scattered across Canalta Timberland and beyond — areas that are completely inaccessible without it. During the main story, you'll need Ground Dive almost immediately after obtaining the Canyne to navigate the Narrow Passage section of Mt. Canalta on the way to the Feral Aknosom boss fight.

The in-game description reads: "A blue-furred Fanged Beast that is both clever and highly athletic. Relatively gentle for a Fanged Beast, it plays an integral role in Sheparden life as a hunting partner and means of transportation."

Canyne elemental weaknesses and resistances

ElementEffectiveness
WaterVery Weak (strongest vulnerability)
ThunderWeak (secondary vulnerability)
FireNeutral
IceResistant
DragonHeavily Resistant

If you're fighting a Canyne (or planning Gene builds around one), Water is the element to prioritize offensively. Thunder also works well. Avoid Ice and Dragon damage entirely — they'll barely scratch it.

StatTrend Rating (out of 10)
HP4
Attack5
Speed9
Defense9

At level 1, the Canyne starts with 45 HP, 21 Attack, 15 Defense, and 15 Speed. Its stat distribution heavily favors Speed and Defense, both sitting at 9 on the trend scale. HP and Attack are modest by comparison. This isn't a damage dealer — it's a fast, durable utility Monstie that excels at staying alive and providing Ground Dive access when you need it.

Stamina Recovery is notably high at 12 with a Max Stamina of 100, which keeps it active in the field for extended exploration sessions.

Targetable parts

The Canyne has four known targetable parts: Main Body, Head, Torso, and Legs. Specific weapon type effectiveness per part has not been confirmed yet, so experiment with Slashing, Blunt, and Piercing weapons to see what breaks fastest.

Skills

The Canyne's innate skills and full skill pool have not been fully documented at this point. As you level it up and experiment with the Rite of Channeling, you can transfer genes from other Monsties to customize its moveset. Given its Speed attack type and Non-Elemental base, pairing it with Water or Thunder genes from other Monsties could round out its offensive capabilities.

The Canyne fills a very specific niche in your Monstie roster. It's not going to top any damage charts, but its combination of high Speed, solid Defense, and the irreplaceable Ground Dive action makes it essential for progressing through Canalta Timberland and accessing hidden areas throughout the rest of the game. Keep it in your party rotation — you'll need it more than you think.
