Dave the Diver: In the Jungle Insect Locations and How to Catch Them

Every bug in the jungle DLC, where each one spawns, and the trick to capturing beetles.

Every bug in the jungle DLC, where each one spawns, and the trick to capturing beetles.

Catching insects is a brand-new collectible system in the In the Jungle expansion for Dave the Diver, sitting alongside fish and crafting materials. You hunt them on land across the jungle’s surface zones, log them in a phone app, and even put beetles into battles to capture the rarer ones. There are 30 species spread across a handful of areas, and each spawns under specific conditions tied to location and time of day.

Quick answer: Reach Chapter 2 to receive the Bug Net, then sneak up on any insect and press the prompt to swing. Beetles cannot be netted — you must defeat them in a beetle battle first. Track your collection in the Insectagram app on Dave’s phone.

Requirements before you can catch insects

Bug catching does not open up the moment you arrive in Utara Village. You first need the Bug Net, which is handed to you once you progress into Chapter 2. From that point on, insects start appearing in the explorable land areas.

Once you own the net, Dave unlocks the Insectagram app on his phone. This works as the catalogue for your collection, letting you see which species you have logged and which are still missing. Use it to confirm a capture registered and to keep track of which areas and times you still need to cover.

Every insect and where it spawns

The table below lists all 30 species, their bug type, the area they appear in, and the time or weather condition needed for them to spawn. Where a spawn time is listed as a dash, the creature can appear regardless of time of day in its area.

Note: The Snail only shows up during the day when it is raining in Utara Village, so wait for wet weather if it is missing from your Insectagram. Some trees also hide insects — chopping one down can flush out a Stick Insect that then tries to crawl away.

How to catch butterflies, moths, and most insects

Equip the Bug Net once you have it from Chapter 2 and approach your target slowly. Quick movements will spook many insects, so close the distance carefully.
When the catch prompt appears above the insect, press the button to swing the net. Butterflies are the most forgiving and rarely flee, while skittish species need a more cautious approach.
Open the Insectagram app to confirm the species has been logged. A successful capture adds it to your catalogue entry.

How to catch beetles through beetle battles

Beetles work differently from every other bug. You cannot simply net them. Instead, you have to win a beetle battle, weakening the wild beetle with one of your own beetles before it can be captured. Defeat it in that showdown and it joins your collection.

Get your first fighter. Udo gives you a free Lesser Stag Beetle in Chapter 3, which is enough to start taking on wild beetles.
Buy more beetles to expand your roster. Udo sells additional beetles in his shop, with a daily purchase limit of three.
Engage a wild beetle in the field and beat it in the battle. Building up a strong stable of beetles makes capturing the tougher species far easier, so collecting plenty pays off.

With the right area, the correct time of day, and a solid beetle team, all 30 species can be cleared off the Insectagram. Keep an eye on weather and day-night cycles for the conditional spawns, and revisit Setah Forest and Murau Temple often, since those zones hold the largest share of the rarer stag beetles and butterflies.
