Fate’s Farewell is an Encounter side quest in Where Winds Meet set on the Path of Karma in Qinghe. It is a short, combat-light story about Nie the Scholar and his lost lover, with a few very specific triggers that can make it frustrating to start if you do not know what the game expects.
Where Fate’s Farewell takes place
Fate’s Farewell unfolds in Qinghe, mainly across three locations:
- Path of Karma, Sundara Land (Qinghe) – where the encounter begins and where you meet Nie several times.
- Wraith Village – a small settlement tied to the Deer Spirit, where you deliver Nie’s keepsake.
- Riverview Terrace – Nie’s home area, where the story closes at a broken wagon by white flowers.
The quest is categorized as an Encounter, not part of the main campaign. It can be done independently as long as you can reach Qinghe and fast travel between these locations.

How to trigger Fate’s Farewell (fog requirement and workarounds)
The biggest hurdle is simply getting the encounter to start. Fate’s Farewell only activates under the right conditions on the Path of Karma.
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Region | Qinghe |
| Exact area | Path of Karma, Sundara Land (near the Path of Karma Boundary Stone) |
| Weather | Foggy day required |
Step 1: Fast travel to the Path of Karma Boundary Stone in Sundara Land when the weather is foggy. If the weather is already foggy when you load in, the encounter should trigger automatically as you move onto the path.

Step 2: If natural fog is not appearing, use the in-game time change to cycle days and check the weather until you see fog.
Step 3: If you still struggle to trigger it, some players report success by using Photo Mode on the rocks beside the path, switching to Pro mode, choosing Heavy Fog, then pressing Tab to allow movement and running toward the path while Photo Mode is active. This can nudge the encounter flag to activate once you have already met Nie earlier.

Fate’s Farewell walkthrough (full quest flow)
Once the encounter starts on a foggy Path of Karma, the quest follows a mostly linear sequence. The structure below keeps each action self-contained so it is easy to follow.
Path of Karma: first meeting with Nie the Scholar
Step 1: After the encounter triggers, walk up the stairs along the Path of Karma. A young man in white, Nie the Scholar, stands in the middle of the road. Approach him to initiate the encounter. He will move up the stairs and barely respond to you.

Step 2: Keep following the path upward. You will soon meet Baili Zhui and Baili Zong from the Aureate Pavilion. Talk to them when prompted; they are searching for a monk they call Miaoshan and offer a reward for any clues.

Step 3: After the conversation, open the in-game time menu and adjust the clock to the Zi hour. This advances the scenario to the next phase and prepares the fog sequence on the stairs.
Path of Karma: Nie in the fog and the Deer Immortal Pendant
Step 1: Once time is set to Zi hour, move back down the Path of Karma, then walk up the stairs again into the fog. Nie now appears on the steps, visibly upset and crying.

Step 2: Wait for Nie’s emotional timer to finish. Do not rush the interaction; let the scene play out until the game signals he has calmed down.
Step 3: Speak to Nie after he calms. He explains that he is looking for the monk Miaoshan to seek help reuniting with his lost love. He hands you a keepsake, the Deer Immortal Pendant (also described as a jade pendant or keepsake), and asks you to deliver it to his old love in Wraith Village.

Wraith Village: meeting Lady Ning and the handkerchief
Step 1: Fast travel to the Wraith Village Boundary Stone in Qinghe. Walk a short distance along the road ahead of the stone; a girl appears in front of you.

Step 2: Approach the girl. She starts to pray to the Deer Spirit while facing a ruined building. When she finishes, head into the building she was facing.

Step 3: Inside the ruined house, interact with Lady Ning. Hand over Nie’s Deer Immortal Pendant / jade keepsake when prompted. After the scene, Lady Ning disappears.

Step 4: On the spot where she stood, a handkerchief is left behind (named Handkerchief of Love in one description). Pick it up. This item now becomes your link back to Nie.

Path of Karma: chasing Nie and dealing with the Aureate Pavilion
Step 1: Return to the Path of Karma via its Boundary Stone. Move along the path again to look for Nie. You encounter him briefly; after speaking, he vanishes and begins to run up the stairs away from you.
Step 2: Chase Nie up the Path of Karma. Follow the route the game highlights, trying not to lose sight of him in the fog.

Step 3: At the top of the stairs, Baili Zhui and Baili Zong block your way again. They question you about the young scholar and then seize the handkerchief you are carrying.
Step 4: A fight begins with the two Aureate Pavilion members. Defeat them to recover the handkerchief. The combat is straightforward; they behave like standard human opponents rather than bosses.

Riverview Terrace: final scene and quest completion
Step 1: After the fight, the trail leads to Riverview Terrace. Fast travel to the Riverview Terrace Boundary Stone in Qinghe.
Step 2: Follow the quest marker from the Boundary Stone. Instead of finding Nie himself, you arrive at a broken-down wagon near white flowers in bloom. This is described as Nie’s home area.

Step 3: Investigate the wagon. Interact with the area to examine a blood-stained white robe inside the wreckage. This confirms the fate implied by the encounter’s name.
Step 4: Place the handkerchief into the wagon as prompted. Once the offering is placed, the encounter resolves, and Fate’s Farewell is marked complete.

Fate’s Farewell rewards
Finishing Fate’s Farewell grants a bundle of currency, progression, and a cosmetic armor piece. Numbers differ slightly between references, but the reward set is consistent.
| Reward | Quantity / Notes |
|---|---|
| Soft-Padded Attire | Unique body armor appearance earned from the quest |
| Echo Jade | 50 |
| Qinghe Exploration | 50 exploration points credited to the Qinghe region |
| Character EXP | 15,000–22,500 (values may vary across descriptions, but fall in this range) |
| Coin | 15,000 |
| Enlightenment Points | 100 (listed in some references in addition to EXP) |
The currencies and EXP arrive through quest progression and final completion, so you do not need to make any choices during dialogue to secure them.
Fate’s Farewell is a compact Encounter, but its weather-gated trigger on the Path of Karma makes it easy to miss. Once the fog condition is met and Nie the Scholar appears, the rest of the quest is a straightforward tour through Qinghe that ties together the Path of Karma, Wraith Village, and Riverview Terrace into a single, melancholic story.
