The Cryoshock Cellar is Fischmas 2025’s most tightly gated area in Fisch. It only opens during Frost Moon weather, it requires three specific items, and once you’re through the final door you’re working against a short timer if you want the Maelstrom Rod and the Cryoshock Serpent.
What has to be true before the hatch can open
The hatch in Northstar Village is not a “show up and interact” secret. It’s locked behind Frost Moon weather and a three-lever sequence that only becomes usable during that weather window.
You also need to be far enough into the Fischmas event to have access to Northstar Village at all. That means starting from Moosewood, taking the Magical Train to Northstar Station, crossing the breaking ice in Freezing Waters to reach Glacial Ridge, and then using the ladders and zipline route into Northstar Castle and its village area.
Items required to enter the Cryoshock Cellar (and why each matters)
There are three hard requirements to open the cellar gate once you drop through the hatch:
- Everfrost Key (earned by completing the missing Santa questline, which begins in the Toy Factory and continues after you find Santa in the Northern Expedition).
- Essence of Winter (a rare fishing item caught in Northstar Village; it has a very low appearance rate around 1 in 1,000).
- Essence of Starfrost (a fishing item that can only be caught while Frost Moon weather is active).
Separately, you need a way to trigger Frost Moon on demand so you can actually access the levers and the hatch when you’re ready.
Getting the Frost Moon Totem (required to trigger Frost Moon)
The Frost Moon Totem is sold for 5,000 Bells in Glacial Ridge’s igloo shop. Glacial Ridge has three igloos; the Frost Moon Totem is sold in Igloo 1 at coordinates -7043.1, 150.1, -17931.5.
Bells are the Fischmas event currency. You earn them by selling Fischmas fish to the Merchant in Northstar Village, completing village NPC quests, and opening Presents, Snowy Presents, and Santa’s Presents.
Hatch location and lever locations in Northstar Village
The hatch itself sits in Northstar Village at approximately -7796.9, 172.1, -17803.5. It only opens during Frost Moon weather.
During Frost Moon, three levers around the village become usable. You must flip all three before dropping through the hatch:
- Lever 1:
-7820, 267.3, -17912.8(up the slope and ladder to the right of the hatch) - Lever 2:
-7867.4, 196.6, -17856(on the ledge behind the green house under the first lever) - Lever 3:

Some coordinate listings for the hatch and levers differ slightly across references, but the interaction pattern is consistent: Frost Moon unfrosts the levers, and flipping all three enables entry through the hatch.
Opening the hatch and unlocking the cellar gate
Step 1: Trigger Frost Moon with the Frost Moon Totem, then move immediately to Northstar Village so you can use the levers while they’re unfrozen.
Step 2: Flip all three Frozen Levers in Northstar Village. If you miss one, the cellar run ends before it starts.
Step 3: Go to the hatch in the village and drop down into the Cryoshock Cellar.
Step 4: Inside, place Essence of Winter and Essence of Starfrost into the statue’s mouth.
Step 5: Use the Everfrost Key in the lock to open the final door.
What changes once the door opens (the timer and the fishing requirement)
Once you unlock the final door, you’re on a strict clock. Expect roughly 15 minutes to do what you came for, which is usually catching the Cryoshock Serpent and buying the Maelstrom rod for 3,250,000C$.
The cellar’s fishing pool is not forgiving. Using Santa’s Miracle Rod (or another Fischmas event rod) with an enchantment applied via a Festive Relic is treated as baseline survival gear for fishing in the pool.
Maelstrom Rod basics (why the cellar run is worth doing)
The Maelstrom is a Fischmas-limited rod purchased inside the Cryoshock Cellar after you get past the Cryoshock Serpent encounter. Its event listing includes these stats: 80% Lure Speed, 85% Luck, 0.15 Control, 35% Resilience, and Infinite Max Kg.
If you’re optimizing your run, treat the cellar like a timed dungeon. Have your essences, key, and rod setup ready before you trigger Frost Moon, because your margin for error is the weather window and the clock behind the door.
