Greater Essence is a rare essence used to enhance gear in The Forge, and it comes from specific higher-tier enemies rather than general mob farming. The most consistent path is to unlock the Forgotten Kingdom, then focus your time in the Ruined Cave and its Volcanic Depths sub-area.
Forgotten Kingdom requirement (Level 10 and Sensei Moro quests)
Greater Essence farming starts after you reach the Forgotten Kingdom, the second region. Access requires completing enough of Sensei Moro’s quests and reaching level 10.
Once you qualify, you can use the Portal item on your hotkey bar to teleport to the Forgotten Kingdom. If you’ve only just arrived, expect to spend some time improving gear before attempting elite enemies.

Enemies that drop Greater Essence
Only a short list of enemies are worth prioritizing for Greater Essence, and two of them are concentrated in Volcanic Depths. One option exists outside that sub-area if you’re not ready for the elites yet.
| Enemy | Drop chance | Where to farm |
|---|---|---|
| Deathaxe Skeleton | 1/8 | The Sunken Cells (Ruined Cave) |
| Elite Rogue Skeleton | 1/6 | Volcanic Depths (Ruined Cave) |
| Elite Deathaxe Skeleton | 1/6 | Volcanic Depths (Ruined Cave) |
Farm route 1: Deathaxe Skeletons in The Sunken Cells (Ruined Cave)
This is the lower-pressure option if you’re newly arriving in Forgotten Kingdom or you want to avoid the heavier fights in Volcanic Depths.
Step 1: Travel to the Forgotten Kingdom and enter the Ruined Cave.
Step 2: Go far east within the Ruined Cave to reach The Sunken Cells.
Step 3: Fight Deathaxe Skeletons for a chance at Greater Essence.

Farm route 2: Elite Rogue Skeletons and Elite Deathaxe Skeletons in Volcanic Depths
Volcanic Depths is the main end of the pipeline for Greater Essence because it contains the two elite enemies with the better listed drop chance.
Step 1: From the Forgotten Kingdom, enter the Ruined Cave.
Step 2: Follow the right-hand wall until you pass under a sign that reads DANGER.

Step 3: Keep following the right-hand wall until you reach an NPC named Amber.
Step 4: Look to the southwest of Amber for a hole with two Basalt Veins in it.
Step 5: Once the Basalt Veins are cleared, drop into the hole to enter the Volcanic Depths.

Step 6: In Volcanic Depths, prioritize only Elite Rogue Skeletons and Elite Deathaxe Skeletons for Greater Essence.

Reapers can feel less punishing on hit, but they have much higher health, which can slow your farming loop if you’re strictly chasing Greater Essence drops.
What to do if the elites are too hard
If Elite Rogue Skeletons or Elite Deathaxe Skeletons are taking too long to kill or you can’t survive reliably, the practical fix is to pause the farm and upgrade your setup. Crafting stronger equipment and using Health and Damage Potions can help you stay in fights longer and reduce downtime.
Where essence fits in progression
Essences are enemy drops used for enhancing weapons and armor. As you enhance gear repeatedly, the money and essence cost increases, and higher enhancement tiers push you toward stronger essence types like Greater Essence.
If you want to cash out instead of upgrading, essences can also be sold for money, with rarer essences generally valued higher than common ones.
