Green Shadow's Blade in Nioh 3: Where to Find and Beat This Formidable Enemy

Green Shadow's Blade is one of the first Formidable Enemies you can encounter in Nioh 3's Warring States era. Classified as an optional human boss in the Tokaido region, he sits quietly by a campfire southeast of the Forest of Souls Shrine, waiting for a challenger. Defeating him is well worth your time — the hut directly behind him contains a chest holding the Roaring Dragon Deflect Secret Skills Text, a Samurai skill that inflicts increased elemental damage received on enemies after a successful deflect.

Quick answer: Travel to the Forest of Souls Shrine in Tokaido and head southeast until you spot a warrior sitting by a campfire. Sneak up for a backstab or land a ranged headshot to start the fight with a significant health advantage, then finish him off with charged heavy attacks in Samurai stance.

Green Shadow's Blade location

Green Shadow's Blade is found in the eastern portion of the Forest of Souls within the Tokaido area during the Warring States period. From the Forest of Souls Shrine, head southeast. You'll find him sitting alone beside a campfire — he won't aggro until you approach or attack, which gives you a critical window to set up your opener. The recommended level for this fight is around 10, making him accessible fairly early in the game if you've been exploring Hamamatsu and Tokaido before tackling the first Crucible mission.

Opening the fight with a free hit

Because Green Shadow's Blade is idle when you first encounter him, you have two strong options for starting the duel at an advantage. If you're playing as a Ninja, you can use stealth to close the gap and land a backstab, which chunks a large portion of his health bar immediately. Alternatively, from any combat style, you can equip a ranged weapon — a bow or rifle — and land a headshot from a distance. Either approach puts you ahead before the actual fight begins, and there's no penalty for taking the cheap shot.

Combat strategy for Samurai players

Green Shadow's Blade fights like a skilled human opponent. He guards well, uses quick slashes, and can punish you if you overcommit to long combos. The most reliable Samurai approach is to use charged heavy attacks (hold Triangle / Y) to break through his guard and deal substantial Ki and health damage. Wait for him to finish an attack string, then step in with a single charged strike before backing off.

Deflecting his attacks is effective here as well. A successful deflect opens him up for a quick follow-up combo, and if you've already picked up the Advantageous Deflect skill from the Hamamatsu Crucible, you'll also reduce any status ailment buildup while charging your Arts Gauge. Time your Burst Breaks when he telegraphs a heavy swing — landing one lets you shift into Ninja form for repositioning or a quick backstab.

Odachi backpedal strategy

One of the simplest methods to beat Green Shadow's Blade — even at level 1 — is to equip an odachi and use spacing to your advantage. Walk backward until he starts running toward you, then immediately use a Triangle attack (heavy attack) with the odachi. The weapon's long reach lets you connect before he can close the distance with his own swing. Repeat this pattern, and the fight becomes almost entirely safe. It's not flashy, but it works consistently and requires no special skills or items.

Ninja approach and dodge-focused tactics

If you prefer the Ninja combat style, Green Shadow's Blade is a good early test of your evasion skills. His attack patterns are readable, and dodging through his strikes gives you clean windows for counterattacks. Focus on staying mobile, using quick dodge rolls to avoid his sword combos, and punishing the recovery frames with fast melee hits or shuriken.

For a dodge-focused no-damage approach, the key is patience. Don't try to rush the fight. Let him attack, dodge to his side or behind him, land two or three quick hits, and then disengage. His Ki pool isn't enormous, so consistent pressure will eventually stagger him, opening up a grapple opportunity for heavy damage.

Reward: Roaring Dragon Deflect

After defeating Green Shadow's Blade, check the hut directly behind where he was sitting. Inside is a chest containing the Roaring Dragon Deflect Secret Skills Text. This is a Samurai-style skill that inflicts increased elemental damage received on an enemy after you land a successful deflect. It's a strong pickup for deflect-heavy builds, especially heading into the Hamamatsu Crucible and the Jakotsu-Baba boss fight, where elemental damage becomes more relevant.

To equip the skill, visit any Shrine or Bodhisattva Statue and open the Skill Management menu. Roaring Dragon Deflect costs skill points to slot in, so make sure you have enough capacity — if you're running low, look for Samurai Texts scattered throughout the world to increase your point limit.

Green Shadow's Blade is entirely optional, but skipping him means missing one of the better early-game Samurai skills. He's also a solid practice target for learning Nioh 3's deflect and Burst Break timing before the game starts throwing mandatory bosses at you in earnest. If you're struggling, remember that an opening backstab or headshot removes a significant chunk of the work, and the odachi backpedal method can carry you through with minimal risk.
