How to Find and Beat Yi Dao in Where Winds Meet

How to Find and Beat Yi Dao in Where Winds Meet

Yi Dao — known as "Killerblade" — is a World Boss in Where Winds Meet, but he's unlike any other open-world encounter in the game. You won't stumble across him while exploring. Instead, he's hidden behind a short quest chain that takes you into a Dreamscape version of Blissful Retreat, and the fight itself is a genuine skill check. He's fast, human-sized, and aggressive, which makes his attack tells harder to read than those of the game's larger bosses.

Quick answer: Complete Chapter 1 of the Main Story (Heaven Has No Pier), then travel to the ruins of Blissful Retreat in Qinghe and interact with the sword buried near a tree by the burned building. This transports you to Dreamscape: Blissful Retreat, where the Lost Chapter "Dream in Flames" culminates in the Yi Dao boss fight.

Unlocking the Yi Dao Fight

Yi Dao does not roam the map. The only way to reach him is through the Lost Chapter quest called Worldly Affairs: Dream in Flames. To unlock it, you must first finish Chapter 1 of the Main Story. After that, return to the burned ruins of Blissful Retreat in the Qinghe region and look for a sword stuck in the ground next to a tree near the destroyed building. Touching the sword pulls you into a separate map — Dreamscape: Blissful Retreat — where you follow a linear path using Cloud Steps across the mountainside until you reach Yi Dao at the end.

Yi Dao First-Clear Rewards

Defeating Yi Dao for the first time grants a fixed set of rewards. The most notable drop is the Breaking Point: Tome, which is the primary reason many players seek this fight out.

Yuan Jin'Gang is the strongest companion pick for this fight. His ranged attacks deplete Yi Dao's Qi bar from a safe distance, and he can stagger the boss without putting himself in danger. In some cases, Yuan Jin'Gang can even position himself across terrain features like the nearby river, forcing Yi Dao to waste time trying to close the gap while you attack freely.

For Mystic Arts, equip Celestial Seize (also called Heavenly Snatch). It's the single most important tool in this fight because it lets you cancel Yi Dao's most dangerous area-of-effect attacks by ripping the sword out of his hands. Evening Snow is a solid Infernal Art complement for additional damage windows.

General Combat Strategy

Yi Dao has a single health bar and one phase, which makes the fight shorter than many other World Boss encounters — but his speed and human-sized frame compensate for that. His animations are compact and fast, so attack tells that would be obvious on a larger boss can be easy to miss here.

The core loop is straightforward: parry red attacks to trigger counterattacks and deal heavy Qi damage, dodge gold attacks entirely since they cannot be blocked or parried, and only commit to offensive combos when Yi Dao is recovering from a move or knocked down. Draining his Qi bar to zero staggers him and opens an Execute window for massive damage.

Many of Yi Dao's multi-hit combos can be handled by mashing the parry button. He frequently chains rapid strikes that register as successful deflections even with imprecise timing, and each deflected hit chips away at his Qi.

Yi Dao Full Moveset and Counters

Below is a breakdown of every major attack Yi Dao uses, along with the safest way to handle each one.

Jump Strike (Red Attack)

Yi Dao leaps toward you with a heavy overhead swing. His blade flashes bright red during the descent. This is a Red Attack — it cannot be blocked, but a well-timed parry triggers a powerful counterattack that deals significant Qi and HP damage. This is one of his most common moves and often caps off other combos, so learning the parry timing here pays dividends throughout the entire fight. Watch for the red flash on his blade and deflect at that moment.

Air Cutter (Triple Wave Slash)

Yi Dao leans back and fires a series of three red-and-black energy projectiles at you. The first two come quickly, but the third is slightly delayed. When you see a hint of red energy emanating from his body, deflect twice in rapid succession to negate the first two projectiles, then watch carefully for the staggered third. Dodging sideways during the charge-up can sometimes throw off his tracking, causing the first two waves to miss entirely.

Blinding Speed Slash

Yi Dao spins and throws his sword at you. After the blade passes through, he teleports to it and executes a series of rapid forward slashes before finishing with a powerful return swipe. The initial sword throw has a generous deflection window — parry as soon as you see him crouch and spin. For the teleporting slashes, stay locked on so your camera tracks him. If you hold your position, most of the intermediate slashes will miss, and you only need to deflect the final return strike. Time that deflect when you see him perform his second horizontal slash while approaching.

Delayed Circular Slashes (Celestial Seize Opportunity)

Yi Dao enters a deep stance as red-and-black energy gathers around him, then swings his sword in large circular arcs that repeat three times. This attack covers a wide area and hits multiple times. The simplest counter is to dash backward and run out of range as soon as you see the stance — he'll whiff entirely and be vulnerable during recovery. Alternatively, stand still and wait for the Celestial Seize prompt to appear. Activating it yanks his blade away, cancels the attack completely, and deals a chunk of damage.

Three-Hit Sweeping Slash (Celestial Seize Priority)

Yi Dao charges his sword with a red aura and unleashes three consecutive sweeping slashes with a wide area of effect. This is one of his most dangerous moves because the AoE makes dodging and parrying unreliable. Save Celestial Seize specifically for this attack whenever possible — it instantly cancels the sweep and disarms him for several seconds, creating a safe damage window. Celestial Seize has a 40-second cooldown, so if it's unavailable, back away immediately when you see the charge-up animation and don't re-engage until the three slashes finish.

Reckless Chop Combo

Three heavy overhead chops in sequence. The first two come back-to-back, so deflect twice quickly. The third chop is delayed — Yi Dao holds his blade raised for roughly half a second longer than the previous two. Watch his sword position carefully and deflect only when he begins the downswing.

Ground Splitter

Yi Dao holds his blade out to the side, charges it with energy, then grips it with both hands and slams it into the ground, sending a linear shockwave forward. The wind-up is long and obvious. Dodge left or right when you see him raise the sword to his side, or parry by waiting until he holds the blade above his head — he'll hold that pose for about half a second before slamming down.

Summon Sword Slam

Yi Dao jumps into the air with a sluggish spin, then smashes his blade into the ground, summoning shadow blades that deal knockback and heavy damage in a large area. This looks similar to Jump Strike at first, but the key difference is the absence of a red flash during the jump. If you don't see red, dash backward immediately to escape the AoE. Once the slam resolves, dash back in to punish him during recovery.

Shadow Clone Troop (Triple Illusion Strike)

Yi Dao plants his sword in the ground and sends out three shadow clones that attack in a cone in front of him. The clones perform three rounds of slashes. Each illusion tracks your position before striking, making this one of his trickiest moves. The safest approach is to dodge backward as soon as he plants the sword and stay at the edge of the cone's range until all three rounds finish. If you prefer to deflect, the three rounds have a consistent rhythm — wait one second after the sword plants, deflect, wait another second, deflect again, and repeat once more.

Never-Ending Slices (Gold into Red)

Yi Dao charges energy as small golden flecks appear around his body, then unleashes a flurry of arching shockwave slashes followed by a final Red Attack dash. The initial flurry consists entirely of Gold Attacks — they cannot be blocked or parried under any circumstances. When you see the golden flecks, back-dash two or three times to escape the flurry's range. The finishing dash, however, is a Red Attack that can be parried for a counterattack. Watch for the red flash on his sword and deflect at that moment. If you get caught in the flurry, spam the parry button — you'll often land the deflect on the follow-up dash even from inside the whirlwind.

Quick Cut

A short-range horizontal slash that Yi Dao often uses to start or end other combos. It's hard to predict in isolation, but it rarely appears if you maintain distance, since Yi Dao prefers gap-closing attacks like Jump Strike when you're far away. If you see him rear back at close range, deflect or dodge backward.

Yi Dao is a demanding fight that rewards patience and parry timing over raw aggression. If you're struggling, consider lowering the difficulty, upgrading your gear, or leaning on Yuan Jin'Gang to whittle down his Qi bar from range while you focus on staying alive. The Breaking Point: Tome reward makes the effort worthwhile, and mastering this fight's deflection windows will serve you well against every boss that follows.
