Quick Info
- Gemini 1.5 Pro is a powerful multimodal AI model from Google that is normally available through a subscription plan.
- You can access it without getting a subscription by logging in to Google AI Studio.
- The new model delivers performance that is comparable to OpenAI's GPT-4 model and can be used with larger data sets compared to the earlier model.
Gemini 1.5 Pro, with a context window of 1 million tokens, is only available with a Google Advanced subscription through the official Gemini website/ app. However, you can access a free version of the model with rate limits by following these steps.
- Visit the Google AI Studio website at aistudio.google.com.
- Next, click on 'Sign in to Google AI Studio' button and log into your Google account if you aren't.
- Close the pop-up that appears when you sign in and then click on the dropdown menu on the right under 'Model' and select Gemini 1.5 Pro.
- To use the new model, type in your query in the search bar at the bottom and then click on the 'Run' button.
- Wait for Gemini's response. You can also ask it follow-up questions and it will retain the context.
Things you should know
- The free tier of Gemini 1.5 Pro has certain rate limits. You can send a maximum of 2 Requests per Minute (RPM) or use 32,000 Tokens per Minute (TPM). Overall, you can make 50 Requests per Day (RPD).
- These rate limits apply to both - using the 1.5 Pro model in Google AI Studio as well as using it through the API.
- Besides the free tier, a paid tier is available as well that offers higher rate limits. The pricing for that depends on the number of tokens used.
- When you access Gemini 1.5 Pro without getting a subscription, you do not get additional benefits, such as up to 2TB of Google Drive storage space and Google Workspace integration.
- With Gemini 1.5 Pro, you can search for information, summarize reports and documents, transcribe audio, run and edit Python code, and more, much faster than the free model.
- While the 1.5 Pro model can handle up to 1 million tokens, that can be scaled up to 2 million tokens, it is unlikely that free users will be able to reach the maximum capacity.
- Google can use your prompts as a Gemini 1.5 Pro free user to train and improve its AI models.
