If you're considering moving from X (formerly, Twitter) to Bluesky, or have already migrated like so many other users, you may be worried about leaving all your tweets behind. Fortunately, there is a way to move all your tweets from X to Bluesky easily, and that involves using the Porto extension. Available for Chromium-based browsers, the Porto extension allows you to import all your posts and tweets to the newer platform, even those you created before Bluesky's release.

Request your X data

Before you can move your tweets from X to Bluesky using Porto, you will need to download your data from X.

  1. Log in to your X account using a desktop web browser and click on 'More' on the left.
  1. Next, click on 'Your account' in the sidebar.
  1. Then, click on 'Download an archive of your data' on the right.
  1. You will need to verify your identity before you can download your data. To do so, enter your password and click on the 'Next' button.
  1. Then click on 'Send code' and the platform will send a code to your email address for verification.
  1. Enter the code sent to your email address in the box and then click on the 'Request archive' button on the right.
  1. Now you need to wait for X to send you an email notifying you that your data is ready for download. While the platform says this can take up to 24 hours, it can take even more time.

Moving your data to Bluesky

Once you have downloaded your X data, you can start the process of migrating it to Bluesky.

  1. Open the extensions store on your Chromium-based browser, like Chrome or Edge, and install the Porto extension.
  1. After installing the extension, sign in to it using your Bluesky account and click on 'Select a folder'.
  1. Navigate to where you've downloaded your X data and select it to upload it. Then enter a date range for the period for which you want to move your X data to Bluesky.
  1. After setting the date range, click on the 'Analyze Tweets' button and wait for the extension to inform you about the number of tweets it can import and the replies and retweets that will be excluded.
  1. Finally, click on the 'Import to Bluesky' button to start migrating your X data to Bluesky. You can keep the extension running in the background and use your computer as you wish as long as you don't close it.

Things to know

  • Porto can transfer all your original tweets from X to Bluesky but cannot move retweets, quote tweets, and replies right now. Similarly, any external links in your tweets will not be transferred, although related comments will.
  • Porto works quite fast and can import tweets from a long time back quickly since it relies on your downloaded X data instead of searching for it on the platform. That said, depending on the time range you set, it can still take time for the process to complete.
  • Right now there is no way to check whether all your X tweets have made it to Bluesky but in most cases, almost all your tweets should be transferred.
  • As Porto brings your tweets to Bluesky, you will be able to see your posts on the newer platform increase in real time.
  • Developers are actively updating and improving Porto and have promised more features coming to the extension in the near future.
