Apple's latest iOS update brings great improvements to smart home functionality, particularly in how iPhones interact with Matter-compatible devices. This change makes setting up and using certain smart home devices more accessible for many iPhone users.
iOS 18 brings the ability to add and locally control Wi-Fi based Matter accessories without requiring a separate home hub. Previously, users needed devices like HomePods or Apple TVs to act as hubs for Matter accessories in the Apple Home ecosystem. Now, with iOS 18, many Matter devices can be set up and controlled directly from Home app in iPhone.
For Wi-Fi based Matter accessories, any iPhone running iOS 18 can handle the setup and local control. Thread-based Matter devices require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, as these models include the necessary Thread radio. Initially, this feature works with mains-powered accessories, while battery-powered devices may need manufacturer updates to be compatible.
iOS 18 also introduces support for Matter-compatible robot vacuum cleaners in the Home app. Users can now add these devices to their Apple Home setup, control them via the app or Siri, and include them in automations and scenes alongside other smart home accessories.
While this update simplifies the process for many users, it's important to understand its scope. Some advanced features still benefit from having a dedicated home hub. Complex automations, remote access when away from home, and certain other functionalities continue to require a HomePod or Apple TV.
This change represents a significant step in making Matter-compatible smart home technology more accessible within the Apple ecosystem. Users can now start with basic Matter devices and gradually expand their setup without immediately investing in additional hardware. It aligns with the broader goal of Matter: to create a more open and interoperable smart home ecosystem across different platforms.
As the smart home industry continues to grow, updates like this show how technology companies (even as greedy as Apple) are working to simplify the user experience.
