The spear’s mobility enchantment now trades hunger for a forward dash and works differently across editions.

Minecraft’s Lunge enchantment explained (costs, levels, Java vs. Bedrock)

Lunge is a spear-only enchantment that converts a jab attack into a short horizontal dash. It’s a mobility tool first and a combat trick second: you keep facing your target, jab, and the enchantment propels you forward. You’ll cover more ground if you trigger it while you’re in the air, which turns Lunge into a reliable gap-closer, ledge-clear, or micro-escape.

Lunge basics: effect and levels

When you perform a jab with a Lunge-enchanted spear, you receive a burst of forward momentum in the direction you’re looking. The push is horizontal, and its distance scales up when used midair. Lunge has three levels, with higher levels providing a stronger dash.

Lunge costs and limits (Java snapshot vs. Bedrock)

Recent development builds change how Lunge pays for that movement on Java, while Bedrock keeps a durability cost. The key differences are below.

Edition Activation cost Use requirement Durability impact Max level
Java (current development snapshot) Level 1: 3 hunger points
Level 2: 4 hunger points
Level 3: 5 hunger points
Requires at least 6 hunger points in the bar No durability damage from Lunge 3
Bedrock Consumes on-use durability instead of hunger None beyond normal combat rules Yes, durability is consumed 3
Note: Lunge behavior is still in development and may change before a final release. Mechanics described here reflect current development versions.

How to get the Lunge enchantment

  • Enchant a spear directly at an enchanting table.
  • Enchant a book, then apply it to a spear on an anvil.
  • Trade for an enchanted book from a librarian (availability may shift with trading updates).
  • Find enchanted books through fishing.

Lunge is a primary spear enchantment and does not apply to other weapons.

When to use Lunge

  • Close distance safely: dash into melee while minimizing exposure to ranged attacks.
  • Traverse terrain: clear short gaps or hop between platforms; the midair boost helps with timing jumps.
  • Reposition in fights: weave in and out after a hit or escape a mob swarm with a quick burst.

On Java development builds, keep an eye on your hunger bar. If it dips below six points, Lunge won’t trigger; carry food and plan around the per-level hunger cost. On Bedrock, plan for durability loss instead and bring a backup spear or materials for repairs.

Version notes that affect how Lunge feels

Alongside the hunger-based cost on Java snapshots, spear charge attacks have been tuned to hit harder and now provide visual feedback when they connect. That doesn’t change Lunge’s trigger (jab attacks), but it makes the overall spear kit feel snappier and more readable during engagements.

If you rely on movement tech, Lunge is worth the slot. It’s straightforward to acquire, scales cleanly to level three, and—especially in midair—adds a mobility option melee has been missing. Just budget for the cost your edition uses, whether it’s food or durability.
