Voidtrain leather guide — sources, crafting, and early‑game uses

Leather is a foundational material in Voidtrain. You’ll use it to build early survivability items, expand carry capacity, and unlock sturdier gear once you reach Workbench II. Here’s where to find it, what it stacks to, and the key recipes it feeds into.

Leather sources (what drops and where to check)

Source How you get it
Fish Defeat the floating fish in the void; they have a chance to drop leather.
Leeches Eliminate leech creatures to roll for leather.
Sharks Kill the shark in each segment; leather can be among its drops.
Strange Chests Open chests found along the route for a chance at leather.
Slot Machine (depots) Use the depot machine; leather can be one of the rewards.
Abandoned Trains Loot these events; leather can appear as salvage.

Leather stacks to 10 per inventory slot.

Early recipes that consume leather (Workbench I)

Leather pays off immediately at Workbench I, especially for survivability and storage.

Item Leather needed Other key materials Workstation
Bandage I 1 Workbench I
Simple Backpack 2 Workbench I
Leather Suit I 4 + 2 Bolts Workbench I

Leather Suit I enables armor plates, giving your character a buffer before health is hit. The first suit supports one armor plate.

Upgrading leather (Sturdy Leather at Workbench II)

Once you reach Workbench II, leather converts into higher‑tier materials and gear.

Product Inputs Workstation
Sturdy Leather Leather + Sealant Workbench II

Sturdy Leather is then used in stronger suits and a larger backpack:

Item Sturdy Leather needed Workstation
Medium Backpack 2 Workbench II
Leather Suit II 4 Workbench II
Note: In-game UI and some references may show different leather counts for intermediate conversions. Follow your Workbench II recipe prompts in your current build if numbers differ.

Decor that uses leather (Crafting Book)

If you’re outfitting your train, several decor pieces consume small amounts of leather.

Decor item Leather needed Workstation
Armchair 1 Crafting Book
Ship Carpet 1 Crafting Book
Luxury Bed 2 Crafting Book
Luxury Armchair I 1 Crafting Book
Luxury Armchair II 1 Crafting Book
Luxury Armchair III 1 Crafting Book
Raider Bed 2 Crafting Book

Practical leather loop (fast early progression)

  • As you enter a new segment, deal with the shark early so you can safely farm the void for drops and containers.
  • Hunt the floating fish and other small creatures; they can drop leather as well as other byproducts like fat and raw meat.
  • Stop at Strange Chests and Abandoned Trains when you can, and don’t skip the depot slot machine — it can pay out leather.
  • Prioritize Leather Suit I at Workbench I (4 Leather + 2 Bolts) to unlock armor plates, then build Bandage I and a Simple Backpack for comfort and uptime.
  • Push to Workbench II to convert Leather + Sealant into Sturdy Leather, which feeds Leather Suit II and a Medium Backpack.

Leather is common enough to support steady crafting if you make a habit of clearing creatures in each stretch and looting every container. Convert it to Sturdy Leather once Workbench II is online to keep your suit and storage in step with the threats ahead.
