You can now access ChatGPT Search via Shortcuts on your iPhone and iPad. First spotted by MacRumours, ChatGPT app showed a shortcut option for 'Open SearchGPT' in the shortcuts app.
Notably, SearchGPT was the name of the prototype for the search engine that OpenAI released a few months ago. However, when the feature was officially released last month, instead of a standalone product, it was released as ChatGPT Search, integrated into ChatGPT itself.
To get the latest shortcut, you need to update your ChatGPT app to the latest version, released on Monday. However, since then, OpenAI has released another update just yesterday.
After updating my app to this latest version, the 'Open SearchGPT' shortcut from MacRumours's screenshots is no longer available. Instead, the option says 'Open ChatGPT Search,' which aligns with the latest release.
- To use the shortcut, go to your Shortcuts app on iPhone and tap on '+' to create a new shortcut.
- Give the shortcut any name you want. Then, using the search actions option, search for 'ChatGPT'.
- Then, select either of the options from 'New Chat Configuration' or 'Start a new conversation with ChatGPT'.
- Next, turn on the toggle for 'Open ChatGPT search' and tap on 'Done' to save the shortcut.
The shortcut will open a new chat in ChatGPT with the search option enabled.
You can use this shortcut manually (not very useful though), ask Siri to run it, assign it to a back tap shortcut, or use it with other automations.
Using the Shortcuts app, you can create automations to run automatically depending on an action, time of day, or location. With the option to now add ChatGPT Search to your automations, you can entirely change the way you search on your iPhone. While it's not as potent as a ChatGPT Search extension that can replace your default search engine in the browser, it's still a good option, especially if you prefer ChatGPT Search over Google, which many users have come to prefer.
Currently, only ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers have access to ChatGPT Search, so access to the shortcut is naturally also limited to subscribers. However, OpenAI eventually plans to roll out access to ChatGPT Search to free users.
