A base Pal is only as good as the two things stacked on top of its Work Suitability: the passive skills it carries. In the early game you are locked into whatever traits a Pal has when you capture it, but later you can shape them deliberately, and the right combination cuts production time and stops workers from breaking down.
Quick answer: Prioritize passives that raise Work Speed and slow SAN loss. Demon’s Hand (+90% Work Speed), Remarkable Craftsmanship (+75%), and Artisan (+50%) are the strongest crafting boosts, while Workaholic, Positive Thinker, and Heart of the Immovable King keep sanity from draining.
Best base Pal passives in Palworld
Work Speed passives reduce how long a task takes, and SAN passives keep a Pal working before it needs a break. The two categories complement each other, since a fast worker that constantly loses sanity ends up idle. The table below covers the passives worth targeting for base duty.
| Passive Skill | Effect |
|---|---|
| Demon’s Hand | Work Speed +90%; SAN decreases 15% faster |
| Remarkable Craftsmanship | Work Speed +75% |
| Artisan | Work Speed +50% |
| Work Slave | Work Speed +30%; Attack -30% |
| Lucky | Attack +15%, Defense +15%, Work Speed +20% |
| Serious | Work Speed +20% |
| Motivational Leader | Player Work Speed +25% |
| Insomnia | Pal does not sleep and keeps working at night |
| Hermit Sage | SAN depletion -50%; Work Speed -20% |
| Heart of the Immovable King | SAN drops 20% slower |
| Workaholic | SAN drops 15% slower |
| Positive Thinker | SAN drops 10% slower |
| Mastery of Fasting | Hunger decreases 20% slower |
| Diet Lover | Hunger decreases 15% slower |
| World Tree Seedbed | Hunger depletion reduced 50%; HP -20% |
Note: Demon’s Hand carries the biggest Work Speed boost in the game, but the faster SAN drain means you should pair it with high-quality food, good beds, and Hot Springs rather than fighting the penalty with another passive.

Add to Google Preferences →Passives for ranching and breeding
Some passives only matter for specialized base roles. If a Pal is assigned to a Ranch or a Breeding Farm, these traits raise output directly instead of speeding up generic tasks.
| Passive Skill | Effect |
|---|---|
| Ranch Master | Farming’s Work Suitability +2 |
| Farmhand | Farming’s Work Suitability +1 |
| Philanthropist | Breeding speed +100% when assigned to a Breeding Farm |
| Babysitter | Egg production +30% and incubation +30% for Pals on a Breeding Farm |
Philanthropist works best on the two Pals sitting in the Breeding Farm, while Babysitter belongs on a separate support Pal working elsewhere in the base so it does not eat a breeding slot.
How to get the passives you want
There are two reliable ways to put a specific passive onto a base Pal. Breeding passes traits from parents to offspring, and the Pal Surgery Table lets you install a chosen passive manually.
Breeding is the cheaper route, but it runs on RNG, so it can take several attempts before an egg hatches with the exact combination you want. Keeping the parents’ extra traits to a minimum shrinks the inheritance pool and makes the target skills easier to land.
The Pal Surgery Table removes the guesswork by letting you select the passive directly. The trade-off is cost, since installing a single passive can run up to 50,000 Gold Coins. For a fully optimized worker you plan to keep permanently, that price is usually worth paying once rather than breeding repeatedly.

Passives to remove from base Pals
Negative traits directly cancel out the gains from good passives. Slower work, faster SAN loss, and higher hunger all reduce a Pal’s uptime, so breed these out or overwrite them at the Surgery Table.
| Passive Skill | Effect |
|---|---|
| Slacker | Work Speed -30% |
| Clumsy | Work Speed -10% |
| Destructive | SAN drops 15% faster |
| Unstable | SAN drops 10% faster |
| Bottomless Stomach | Hunger decreases 15% faster |
| Glutton | Hunger decreases 10% faster |
| Night Owl | Sleeps through the day, active only at night |
Because opposing passives cancel each other out, a Pal carrying both Slacker and a strong Work Speed trait will underperform one that runs clean boosts. Prioritize clearing the negatives before you stack more positives on top.
With four passive slots to fill, the ideal base worker combines two or three Work Speed traits with a SAN or hunger reducer, then adds Insomnia if the Pal is not naturally nocturnal so it keeps producing overnight. Start with a Pal that already has strong Work Suitability for its job, then layer these passives on to squeeze out the fastest possible production.
