The Blood of Dawnwalker: A Monk and a Saint Full Walkthrough

Find Albertus in the Middens, unlock St. Mihai's crypt, and claim the Broken Sword to start Forge It Anew.

Find Albertus in the Middens, unlock St. Mihai’s crypt, and claim the Broken Sword to start Forge It Anew.

A Monk and a Saint sends Coen chasing a relic through Svartrau City, starting with a half-mad scribe and ending with a fight against a dead saint. The chain runs from the Middens to the Cathedral Complex, and the payoff is the Broken Sword of St. Mihai plus the follow-up quest, Forge It Anew.

Quick answer: Learn the St. Mihai symbol (inspect the ceiling murals in the Cathedral Complex for the fastest route), then head to the western side of the complex, clear the guards near the well, and search the graves until you find the one bearing the symbol. Drop into the crypt, use Focus Mode in the central room, inspect the broken brick, and defeat Mihai.

How A Monk and a Saint unlocks in The Blood of Dawnwalker

The quest starts at Svartrau Cathedral once Coen hears about the sword belonging to the cathedral’s patron saint. It triggers automatically after Between the Worlds, provided Echoes of Silent Bells is already done. If you skipped that thread, Night Terrors works as an alternate key — you can pick that quest up by walking into the cathedral courtyard and approaching the well on the northern side of the main building.

Your first objective points at the Middens, where a scribe named Albertus has gone to pieces. He knows where the silver sword of Saint Mihai ended up, and getting that answer out of him is the entire opening act.

Tracking Albertus through the Middens

Open the Svartrau City map and set the marker for the Middens. The district is grimy and easy to get turned around in, so keep the objective tracked before you head in.
Enter the Middens and find the shrine near the entrance. This is the anchor point for the trail you are about to follow.
Inspect the yellow writing daubed on the wall. Reading it tells Coen to follow the rest of the writings, which chain outward through the district.

Expect an ambush partway along the trail. Clear the attackers, then keep moving from marking to marking until the trail runs out at Albertus.

Note: the writings are the objective, not scenery. Skipping past them without inspecting stalls the quest, because Coen needs to read them before the next marker appears.

Cathedral Complex work: treasury, deacon, and the almshouse

What Albertus gives up points Coen at Svartrau Cathedral. Three threads open up there, and they all feed the same goal of getting under the building. You investigate the cathedral treasury, help the local deacon track down a caretaker who has gone missing, and push into a sealed wing of the almshouse that plague shut off.

The sealed wing is where the game expects you to slow down. Treat every locked room as a potential source of the information you need rather than a detour, and do not sell or discard anything you pull out of it.

Learn the St. Mihai symbol before hunting for the crypt

You cannot identify the right grave until Coen knows what the saint’s mark looks like. Three routes teach him, and they cost different amounts of in-game time.

How to learn the symbolTime cost
Inspect the ceiling murals inside the Cathedral Complex0 hours
Read The Annals of Svartrau Cathedral in the Cathedral Complex library1 hour
Read the Thief’s note during the Night Terrors quest1 hour

The murals are free, so take that option unless you have already read one of the other two. Time is a resource in this game, and an hour spent in a library is an hour not spent elsewhere.

Finding the crypt entrance in the graveyard

Move to the western part of the Cathedral Complex. The entrance sits among the graves rather than inside the building itself.
Deal with the guards posted around the well. If you already cleared them during Night Terrors, the area will be quiet and you can walk straight through.
Start interacting with the graves and look for the St. Mihai symbol carved on one of them. To skip the sweep, begin at the bottom right corner of the plot and move one grave to the left.
Clear the leaves off that grave to expose the mark, then drop inside. Loot the coffins as you pass through for extra items before you go deeper.

Waking Mihai and finishing the quest

Head into the crypt and make your way to the room in the middle. The quest tracker updates to explore the crypt once you are inside.

Turn on Focus Mode in the central room to surface the interactable object. Without it, the correct spot on the wall is easy to walk past.
Inspect the broken brick in the wall. This costs an hour and releases Mihai, dropping you straight into a fight with the cathedral’s patron saint.
Win the fight. Mihai then explains that Tobias betrayed him, that the Kohboldin took the other half of his blade, and that Coen should seek out The Augurs for help with his Dawnwalker abilities.

You know it worked when the journal marks A Monk and a Saint as complete and Forge It Anew appears in its place. The Broken Sword of St. Mihai will be sitting in your inventory, and the new objective points you toward the missing shard the Kohboldin carried off.

If the crypt entrance refuses to open, the cause is almost always the same one thing — Coen has not learned the St. Mihai symbol yet. Go inspect the ceiling murals, then come back to the graves.

Everything here holds for The Blood of Dawnwalker as it shipped on September 3rd, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. Hang onto the broken blade after the fight, because reforging it is the whole point of the quest that follows.
