The Witcher 3: How to Get Mastercraft Armor (Master Armorers Quest)

Unlock Yoana, the only crafter who makes the base game's highest tier of armor, by finishing one secondary quest.

Unlock Yoana, the only crafter who makes the base game’s highest tier of armor, by finishing one secondary quest.

Mastercraft armor is the top tier of armor in the base game of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and only one person can forge it. Her name is Yoana, and she works the forge at Crow’s Perch in Velen. To open her mastercraft services, you need to finish the secondary quest Master Armorers, which has a suggested level of 24 but can be started much earlier without any risk of locking yourself out.

Quick answer: Finish the Master Armorers secondary quest to unlock Yoana at Crow’s Perch, the only crafter who makes mastercraft armor. The steps below cover the tools, the archgriffin gland, and the armor test.

What you need before starting

The quest spans two regions, so a little setup saves time. Make sure you can reach each location before committing to a full run.

  • Access to Crow’s Perch in Velen, reached during the Bloody Baron main quest chain.
  • Access to Skellige, specifically the island of Undvik, where the smithing tools are kept.
  • A character strong enough to beat a higher-level Ice Troll and an archgriffin.
  • Silver sword oils help, with Ogroid Oil for the troll and Hybrid Oil for the archgriffin.

Start Master Armorers at Crow’s Perch

At Crow’s Perch in central Velen, find dwarf armorer Fergus Graem in the inner yard. His shop is beside the Quartermaster and close to the notice board.
Ask Fergus about crafting mastercraft armor. Geralt requests gear that is both light and durable. Fergus insists that is impossible, and his assistant Yoana steps in to mention the high-quality tools of Clan Tordarroch, which could make exactly that kind of armor.

You can also trigger the quest by asking the armorer at Hierarch Square in Novigrad or the armorer at Kaer Trolde keep in Skellige about mastercraft gear. They point you back to Fergus and grant a small extra journal entry, but the quest plays out the same way.

Get the smithing tools from Clan Tordarroch Forge

The tools sit inside the Clan Tordarroch Forge on Undvik, the southwesternmost island in the Skellige archipelago. If this is your first time in Skellige, progress the main story through Destination: Skellige, attend the wake that starts The King is Dead, Long Live the King, and finish that quest so Crach offers you The Lord of Undvik. You will usually pass through the forge area while doing The Lord of Undvik.

Reach Undvik. If you have no fast-travel points there yet, swim, take a boat, or buy a map from the roaming merchant on the main Skellige island to unlock the Marlin Coast fast-travel point.

Enter the cave. Shortly after the entrance, you reach a ledge above a pool of water. Dive in, then deal with the erynias as you surface and use your Witcher Senses to follow the path.
At the glowing tree surrounded by Harpies, turn around, find the nearby wooden ladder, and climb it. Go through the short tunnel occupied by Devourers and leave through the cave’s far side to unlock the fast-travel point for Clan Tordarroch Forge.
After exiting, ignore the house on your right and take the cave entrance on the left. Inside waits a level 26 Ice Troll that aggros before you can open the chest. Kill it, then loot the chest for the high-quality smithing tools and the silver sword Deithwen.

Get the archgriffin acid gland for Yoana

Return to Crow’s Perch and give the tools to Fergus. During the talk, the Nilfgaardian officer Harmon aep Groenekan arrives and demands his own armor. Yoana reveals she is the real talent behind the forge and asks for archgriffin gland acid to prove it. Agree to help her.

Pick up the contract that now appears on the Crow’s Perch notice board, Contract: The Griffin from the Highlands. It sends you to a spot just outside Crow’s Perch and rewards extra experience and gold on top of the gland.
Travel to the marked location, pick up the trail with your Witcher Senses, and track the archgriffin to its nest on the hill to the north. The beast spits poison, so keep moving and roll clear of it. Hybrid Oil, Grapeshot bombs, and Aard all help.
Take down the archgriffin and collect the acid gland from its body. Bring the trophy to the Quartermaster at Crow’s Perch to complete the contract, then deliver the gland to Yoana for her to forge her armor.

Test the armor to finish the quest

Once the armor is ready, Harmon insists both sets be tested by firing crossbow bolts at the wearers. Geralt wears Yoana’s armor while a villager wears the piece credited to Fergus. All you do is wait for the shot.

You must agree to the test. If you refuse, the quest fails, Yoana leaves Crow’s Perch for good, and you lose the only master armorer in the base game.

Yoana’s armor wins the test. Harmon declares the forge hers and pays her. Fergus prepares to leave, but Yoana invites him to stay on as her assistant, reversing their roles. She hands you the Diagram: Mag Deira cuirass on the spot.

Rewards and how to confirm it worked

After the test, meditate and wait one full day so Yoana can finish her gift. Return to her to collect the medium Witch Hunter’s Armor, which completes Master Armorers. Her shop now offers mastercraft armor crafting, and you can confirm this by opening her crafting menu, where the top-tier Witcher sets appear if you own their diagrams.

With Yoana unlocked, the mastercraft Witcher sets become craftable once you own the right diagrams, which you find through the various Scavenger Hunt quests across Velen and Skellige. The sets themselves require level 34 to wear, and each piece needs the previous tier of that item, so keep your earlier gear. For the matching mastercraft swords, you also need Master Blacksmith Hattori in Novigrad, since Yoana only handles armor.
