Back when Spotify launched in 2008, music streaming services were slowly becoming popular. However, it was the launch of this Swedish audio-streaming service that truly revolutionized the industry. Currently, it is one of the largest streaming platforms globally, and its user base continues to grow rapidly.

Spotify offers features like daily mixes, lyrics, collaborative playlists, and more, which have helped it become the top choice for many. This week, the platform launched another impressive feature – AI Playlists, which lets you create playlists using prompts based on colors, movie characters, activities, places, and more.

Currently, the feature is available for Premium users in the UK and Australia for Android and iOS devices and will expand to other regions with time. If you're residing in an area where the new AI-generated playlist feature has become available, here is how you can try it out.

How Does Generating AI Playlists Work?

Spotify's AI-generated playlists require users to enter text prompts or phrases. These prompts can include names of fictional characters, emojis, colors, etc. Spotify uses a generative artificial intelligence model (LLM) to understand what the user intends through their inputs and then recommend songs based on that. The feature is currently only available in English.

For the feature to work, the prompts you provide have to be music-related. Otherwise, it won't produce any results. So, you cannot use specific brands and current events when providing the needed input. Additionally, the developers have put measures to prevent the use of offensive prompts.

Prompts that can get you the best results should ideally include a combination of decades, artists, moods, and genres. AI-generated playlists can also help you follow a specific music style by helping you discover new tunes in that style.

Spotify relies on a selection of third-party tools for its machine-learning and AI features. So, if you cannot come up with a prompt, Spotify will offer suggestions to help you get started. The company has been experimenting with AI for some time, launching its AI DJ last year, which offers personalized song selections to users.

AI-generated playlists are the next phase in its plan to integrate AI with its services. It is still in beta, and the developers are working to improve it before its wider rollout. While the feature is expected to become available globally, currently, there is no word on when that will happen.
