Amid ongoing security concerns with video conferencing software like Zoom, Google has now made ‘Google Meet’ free to use for both G suite and non-G suite users until September 30 2020.

While the ability host or start a meeting on Google Meet is only available to G Suite users, the non-G Suite users could join a meeting effortlessly when invited.

There are multiple ways to join a meeting on Google Meet. You could join even when you’re not a part of the organization hosting the meeting if you’ve got the ‘Meeting Code’, or with the joining link of the Google Meeting.

Join a Google Meet without G Suite account

Since Google Meet works entirely in a web browser, you don’t need to install a Google Meet client on your computer. You could use Chrome or the New Edge Browser to join a meeting by opening meet.google.com in the browser.

Using Google Meet Link

Example of a Google Meet Link:
https://meet.google.com/ath-dvjc-vug

If you’ve got a joining link for Google Meet, all you need to do is open the link in a browser, and click on the ‘Ask to join’ button to request the host to let you in on the meeting.

In case you aren’t signed in with your Google account in the browser, you can still join the meeting by providing your name first, and then clicking the ‘Ask to join’ button on the screen.

Using a Google Meet Code

Example Google Meet Code: ath-dvjc-vug

If you’ve received a meeting code instead of a joining link for a Google Meeting, then open the meet.google.com website in either Chrome or Edge and click on the ‘Use a meeting code’ button to join the meeting.

Enter the ‘Meeting code’ in the text field and click the ‘Continue’ button.

You’ll be asked to enter your name (if you aren’t signed in). Click the ‘Ask to join’ button when you’re ready to join the meeting.

Join a Google Meet with a G Suite account

G Suite users within the same organization or from other organizations can use the Google Meet ‘Joining link’ or ‘Meeting code’ to join a meeting like non-G Suite could do. But in addition to that, G Suite users within the same organization could also join a Google Meeting by merely using the meeting nickname set by the host of the meeting.

Open meet.google.com website in the browser and sign-in with your organization G suite account. Then, click on the ‘Join or start a meeting’ button.

If you know the meeting ‘Nickname’, use that to quickly join the meeting. Or else, use the ‘Meeting code’ to join the meeting like everyone else.

Click the ‘Ask to join’ button on the next screen to join the meeting when you’re ready.

You could also join a meeting by phone on Google Meet. Ask the meeting host to provide you with the phone number and PIN.

Example ‘Join by phone’ detail:
To join by phone, dial +1 475-441-5157 and enter this PIN: 281 695 636#

It’s effortless to join a meeting on Google Meet, no matter if you are G Suite user or not. Also, Google Meet lets you join a meeting as a guest as well from the browser which Zoom appears to have disabled amid controversies challenging its security.
