Google Chat has now replaced the Google Hangouts, and that was kind of expected as Hangouts was already running on borrowed time with the dated user interface. While some are embracing the change with open arms, some still want to stick with Hangouts.
Whatever may be your preferences, with Google Chat now in the house and many people migrating to it. There is a foreseeable future when Google drops the support for Hangouts. Though that maybe is looking too much into the future and that’s not something you should be concerning yourself with right now.
What you should be concerning yourself with is making sure you can make the most out of the service you are using; We all know how distracting a notification chime can get and hamper your productivity. Thus, knowing to mute notifications in Google Chat can come really handy at the time of need. So let’s get started!
Mute Google Chat Notification on Desktop
Go to chat.google.com and log in to your account. After logging in, click on the ‘Active’ button which would be located on the upper right section of the screen. Next, click on the ‘Do not Disturb’ option.
Now, you’ll be able to choose the duration for which you want to mute notifications for. You can click on your desired duration to mute notifications till that specific time. After that, you will start receiving the notifications.
Once enabled, you’ll be able to see till what time the notifications are muted for at the same location you accessed the options from.
You Can also Reduce Notifications for Group Chats
We all know how at times, groups have the ability to bombard you with notifications and drive you crazy. For the sake of your own sanity, you might want to reduce the notifications of groups to only when you are mentioned to filter all the noise.
To reduce the notifications limited only to your mentions, click on the kebab menu (three- vertical-dots) situated right next to the group chat you want to reduce notifications for. Next, click on the ‘Notifications’ option from the list.
To get a notification only when you are mentioned, click on the ‘Notify less’ option from the list and hit ‘Save’ to apply the changes.
You can also completely opt out of the notifications by clicking on the ‘Notifications off’ option. However, you’ll still receive a notification dot if you are mentioned in the group chat.
Mute Google Chat Notifications on Mobile
Muting notifications in Google Chat for mobile devices is way too straightforward. Especially for android, it’s just a single step procedure. Follow along to know how to do it.
On Android Devices
Open the Google Chat app on your device, and tap on the ‘Active’ button situated on the top left section of your screen. Next, tap on the duration you want to mute the notifications for.
That’s it, you will be able to see till what time your notifications have been muted at the same section of your screen.
On iOS Devices
Open the Google Chat app on your iPhone or iPad, and tap on the hamburger icon situated at the top left corner of your screen.
Next, tap on the ‘Active’ tab to reveal the options and then tap on ‘Do not disturb’ option.
You will now be able to choose the duration for how long you want to mute the notifications for. You can tap on any to choose one.
Once the duration has been selected. To check the status and the time till notifications are disabled, tap again on the hamburger icon on the screen.
