Continuous notifications from Google Chat can be disruptive and interfere with your focus, especially when you're trying to concentrate. Knowing how to mute these notifications can significantly enhance your productivity.
Mute Google Chat notifications on mobile
Muting notifications in the Google Chat app on your mobile device is a quick and simple process. Below are the steps for both Android and iOS devices.
On Android devices
Step 1: Launch the Google Chat app on your Android device.
Step 2: Tap on the Active status icon located at the top left corner of the screen.
Step 3: Select the desired duration for which you want to mute the notifications.
After selecting the duration, you'll see the time until which notifications are muted displayed in the same area.
On iOS devices
Step 1: Open the Google Chat app on your iOS device.
Step 2: Tap on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) at the top left corner of the screen.
Step 3: In the menu, tap on your Active status to open the availability options.
Step 4: Select Do not disturb from the list.
Step 5: Choose the duration for which you want to silence notifications by tapping on the preferred option.
After selecting the duration, you can verify the mute status and the time until notifications are disabled by tapping the menu icon again.
Mute Google Chat notifications on desktop
Controlling notifications on the desktop version of Google Chat is equally straightforward.
Step 1: Open chat.google.com in your web browser and sign in to your account.
Step 2: Click on your Active status located at the top right corner of the screen.
Step 3: From the dropdown menu, select Do not disturb.
Step 4: Choose the duration for which you want to mute notifications by clicking on the desired time frame. After the selected period, notifications will resume automatically.
After setting up, you can see the time until which notifications are muted by checking your status at the same location.
Reduce notifications for group chats
Group chats can sometimes overwhelm you with constant notifications. To minimize distractions, you can adjust the settings to receive notifications only when you're mentioned.
Step 1: In the Google Chat web interface, locate the group chat you want to adjust.
Step 2: Click on the three vertical dots (more options) icon next to the group chat name.
Step 3: From the dropdown menu, select Notifications.
Step 4: Choose Notify less to receive notifications only when you're mentioned in the conversation, then click Save to confirm.
If you prefer not to receive any notifications from the group chat, select Notifications off. Please note that you'll still see a notification dot if someone mentions you in the group.
