The compositions below cover the three roles most players need at launch: a high-investment boss killer, an AoE farming setup, and an F2P-friendly progression team, plus reaction-specific lanes for Anima, Incantation, and Cosmos rosters.

Quick answer: Build around an elemental lane first (two characters whose elements trigger a reaction), then add a flex support like Adler, Hotori, Edgar, or Fadia. Save Ultimates for stagger windows.

How the Esper Cycle decides team building

The Esper Cycle is a shared meter that fills as your team attacks, uses Skills, and parries. When it caps, one teammate is highlighted, and swapping to that character triggers a reaction-amplified hit. Teams that pair compatible elements fill the meter faster and convert each cycle into a real damage window.

The reactions that matter most for team-building are Blossom (Anima + Cosmos), Scorch (Incantation + Chaos), Nova (Chaos + Psyche), Stain (Lakshana + Psyche), Hexed (Anima + Incantation), and the advanced Discord reaction, which triggers when Scorch and Nova are active on the same target and rapidly drains the boss break bar.

The other system to plan around is the stagger bar. High-damage carries hit a soft ceiling against shielded enemies, so a Break specialist like Daffodil is what lets the rest of the team reach full damage. Daffodil's passive also reduces enemy max break bar through Discord, which is why she shows up in most endgame comps.


Flex picks that fit almost any team

Before locking a roster, these four units are worth keeping in mind because they slot into multiple lanes without breaking the elemental chain.

Boss execution team: Daffodil, Nanally, Fadia, Adler

This is the high-investment squad built to stack three reactions at once. Adler applies Incantation, Daffodil applies Chaos, and the pairing produces Scorch, a 15-second damage-over-time. Daffodil and Fadia overlap Chaos with Psyche to produce Nova, and once Scorch and Nova share a target, Discord activates and starts shredding the break bar continuously.

Nanally sits on top of the chain without disrupting it. Her Underboss follow-up keeps firing while she is off-field, and her Anima hits combine with Adler's Incantation to passively generate Hexed in the background. Fadia's damage redirect, combined with her absorption cap and non-lethal floor, gives the team enough survivability to keep DPS uptime through long boss fights.

Rotation:

Step 1: Open with Adler to apply Incantation and put a shield on the team.

Step 2: Swap to Daffodil to apply Chaos. Scorch begins ticking, and the break bar starts to give.

Step 3: Swap to Fadia to layer Psyche, which sets up Nova and locks in Discord once Scorch overlaps.

Step 4: Swap to Nanally for sustained hits and reaction follow-ups. Loop based on procs and save Ultimates for stagger windows.

Build priorities lean into role specialization: Adler stacks DEF for shield and DoT scaling, Fadia stacks HP for redirect durability, Daffodil focuses on Chaos DMG and RES ignore, and Nanally runs Crit DMG with reaction scaling.


AoE farming team: Nanally, Zero, Sakiri, Jiuyuan

The AoE setup trades single-target ceiling for constant pressure across waves. Zero applies Cosmos to combine with Nanally's Anima, generating Blossom, an autonomous entity that keeps attacking nearby enemies. Jiuyuan groups mobs and adds Incantation to layer Hexed alongside the Blossom hits, so multiple reactions tick independently without needing tight rotations.

Damage scales with hit count rather than burst windows, which makes the team strong in wave content but weaker against shielded bosses. The fourth slot is flexible, since Sakiri's main job is grouping and her investment can stay low.

Rotation:

Step 1: Open with Sakiri to pull enemies into a tight cluster. Avoid using grouping on low-value mobs to save the cooldown for dense packs.

Step 2: Swap to Zero to apply Cosmos and trigger Blossom on the grouped enemies.

Step 3: Swap to Nanally for sustained on-field DPS while the Underboss continues firing off-field.

Step 4: Bring in Jiuyuan as needed for healing, regrouping, or extra Incantation tags. Repeat the loop while keeping hit generation continuous.


F2P transitional team: Chiz (or Zero), Adler, Mint, Skia

The F2P setup is a baseline progression team that handles early and midgame without requiring premium pulls. Adler covers shields and Incantation setup, Mint adds team buffs, Chiz handles primary damage through her Skill and Ultimate cycles, and Skia provides healing in place of more advanced defensive tools.

The structure works for story content and lower-tier endgame, but reaction density is limited and scaling falls off in harder bossing. The intended progression is to replace Chiz with Daffodil first, then add Nanally and shift toward a real reaction-based comp.

Rotation:

Step 1: Lead with Adler to put up shields and apply Incantation.

Step 2: Swap to Mint for team buffs before the main damage window.

Step 3: Swap to Chiz for Skill and Ultimate damage.

Step 4: Bring in Skia for healing when health drops, then loop.


Reaction-specific lanes for different rosters

If your pulls don't line up with the templates above, building around a single reaction lane is the cleanest way to keep damage consistent. Each of these focuses on one reaction and uses flex picks for the remaining slots.

The Anima Blossom team prioritizes Nanally's 30 percent Crit Skill buff before her Ultimate, with Zero's Skill providing instant Esper Cycle procs so you don't wait for the meter. The Incantation team relies on Baicang's Power Word rotations for damage, but he loses HP each time he uses one, so a healer or Fadia is mandatory; his Ultimate has a 5 percent execute threshold on bosses, so it's worth holding for finishers.

The Cosmos team revolves around Chiz's Grain economy. Her Ultimate enters a market window where damage depends on price fluctuations, and she repays Debt automatically when you swap out, so timing the swap during a Profit state matters. Hathor batteries her costly Ultimate, but her Express Delivery state ends the moment you switch off her, so don't swap mid-buff.

The Lakshana team is the lowest-friction option. Skia's on-field damage is steady, Stain automatically increases Psyche and Lakshana damage taken by 50 percent for 12 seconds, and there are no resource bars to track. Fadia substitutes cleanly for Sakiri if survivability is the bottleneck.


Substitution rules when your roster doesn't match

Rosters at launch will rarely match a template exactly. The priority is to keep the elemental lane intact rather than chase the strongest individual character.

  • Replace within the same element first. A weaker Incantation unit usually beats a stronger off-element pick because it preserves the reaction.
  • Use the fourth slot to solve a specific weakness: survivability, grouping, healing, or burst extension.
  • Adler, Hotori, Edgar, and Fadia work in multiple lanes and are safe defaults when a role is missing.
  • Use Ultimates only inside stagger windows, regardless of which team you're running.

Most failed clears at launch trace back to a broken reaction loop or a missing role rather than under-leveled stats. Pick a lane your roster can actually support, keep the elemental chain clean, and the damage ceiling rises on its own as investment catches up.
