Chests are the fastest way to build up gear, currency, and boats in 100 Days at Sea. They spawn on islands, drift in the open ocean, and appear after you clear certain enemies or objectives. Inside them you can find weapons, armor, boats, Doubloons, and crafting materials, and opening enough of them also unlocks progression badges.

Quick answer: There are three chest categories. Doubloon Chests give a fixed batch of Doubloons, variable-loot chests roll from a reward pool (Container-style chests have the best odds for armor and weapons), and fixed-loot chests always hand over the same item based on where you open them.

Fixed-loot chests and their guaranteed rewards

Some chests always drop the exact same reward, which makes them worth targeting when you need a specific item. These include Purple Chests, Green Ghost Pirate Chests, boss chests, the Dinghy Chest, and Alien Chests. The table below lists each one, where it appears, and what it contains.

Purple Chests change loot by location

Purple Chests are among the most rewarding chests in the game, but what they contain depends entirely on where you open them. On Oil Rigs they always hold a Container-style item plus a weaker Doubloon Chest. On Treasure Islands they either spawn on their own or appear after you finish the island’s required task, then hand over a set item. On the Cargo Ship, one of the two Purple Chests gives a Lightning Rod.

Because the reward is tied to the spot, you can farm specific gear reliably. For example, the Purple Chest on the Mushroom Treasure Island always drops a Riptide.

Green Ghost Pirate Chests

Two Green Ghost Pirate Chests exist in the game. The first sits inside the Pirate Stronghold and appears only after you defeat every Pirate in the area. Opening it always gives a Ghost Cutlass and a Galleon Bell.

The second is tucked inside the Ghost Galleon, where it rewards a Boomstick and the Galleon Boat.

Boss chests drop a weapon per boss

Defeating certain bosses summons a chest that always holds a specific weapon along with Doubloons. Each boss maps to one guaranteed drop.

  • The Yeti drops a chest containing the Ice Staff.
  • The Lord of Lava drops a chest containing the Magma Staff.
  • The Corrupter drops a chest containing the Void Slicer.

Dinghy Chest on Fisherman’s Island

The Dinghy Chest sits inside the hut on Fisherman’s Island. Opening it always gives a Dinghy, which is a simple way to grab an early-game boat without spending materials to craft one.

Alien Chests

Alien Chests appear on Alien Islands and the Alien Mothership. They mainly hold Alien Metal and Alien Wood, and you may occasionally pull an Airdrop Grenade from one.

Variable-loot and Container chests

Variable-loot chests do not guarantee a single item. Instead they roll from a pool of possible rewards, and the contents can shift based on where you find them. Several of these are scattered across the map, and some can even include food items.

The best variable chests are the ones held inside Container-style structures, whether you craft them or discover them while exploring. These carry a higher chance of dropping armor and can also contain weapons, which makes them the go-to option when you want to upgrade your loadout mid-run.

Doubloon Chests and spending Doubloons

Doubloon Chests stand apart because you can stash them in your sack and open them later. Each one is single-use, so only the player who opens it claims the reward. Most give 15 Doubloons on opening. The exception is the weaker Doubloon Chest found inside Purple Chests on Oil Rigs, which pays out roughly seven to eight Doubloons.

You spend those Doubloons at the MukuMuku Merchant.

Where chests spawn and badge milestones

Chests turn up across many parts of the map, so island detours become worthwhile once you can safely leave your raft. Common spawn points include:

  • Islands and Treasure Islands
  • Oil Rigs
  • Pirate Strongholds and Ghost Galleons
  • Cargo Ships
  • Fisherman’s Island
  • Floating in the open ocean

Some chests are ready to open the moment you reach them, while Treasure Chests and boss chests require you to complete a task or beat enemies first. Opening chests also feeds two badge goals, with 100 chests cleared in a single run and 500 chests opened in total. You cannot craft a chest, so every one you collect has to be found out in the world.
