How the four launch Specializations stack up for solo runs and squad play as of the August 2026 Steam release.

The Division Resurgence puts a class system on top of its cover shooter, and Specializations are that system. Each one hands you a distinct signature ability, a set of gadgets, and a clear job on the battlefield, whether you are pushing through Manhattan alone or holding a line with a squad. With the game now live on Steam as of August 5, 2026, plenty of new agents are picking a lane for the first time, so here is how the launch Specializations compare when it actually matters.

The Division Resurgence Specializations tier list

There are four Specializations available to build around, and they fall into three tiers based on how much they carry a fight. The table below is the short version. The reasoning for each placement follows underneath.

TierSpecializationPrimary role
SVanguardDamage buff and recon hybrid
ADemolitionistExplosive crowd control and DPS
AField MedicHealing and corrosive support
BBulwarkFrontline tank

Note: This ranking reflects the launch balance around the August 2026 Steam release. You are not locked into one choice. You can swap your Specialization from the character menu whenever you want, and progress you earn on one class stays with it, so experimenting costs you nothing but time.

S-tier: Vanguard

Vanguard sits at the top because it does the most for the least work, and it does it in every scenario. It is the tip of the spear in a group and the strongest option when you queue in solo. The kit leans directly into the cover shooter loop the franchise is built on, which is exactly why it stays relevant from your first mission to endgame.

Scanning Pulse marks enemies and reveals them through walls, so you rarely get surprised. Smart Cover buffs the piece of cover you are behind with damage reduction and extra output. The signature, Tactical Link, hands you a window of increased crit chance and aim assist, which turns a corner you are pinned in into a kill zone. In a squad, that buff and that intel lift the whole team, and solo it means you can fight aggressively without a medic backing you up.

A-tier: Demolitionist and Field Medic

Both of these are skill-focused builds that pull serious weight, and each becomes a genuine S-tier pick in the right context. They land in A because their power is more situational than Vanguard’s all-around reliability.

Demolitionist

Demolitionist is the explosive DPS answer and the easiest class to solo with. The Explosive Seeker Mine tracks targets and is hard for enemies to shoot down, the Artillery Turret pulls aggro and rains ordnance in waves, and the M32A1 Grenade Launcher signature deletes tough groups and bosses. Those deployables essentially act as a second player, drawing fire while you clear rooms. In squads its job shifts toward shredding heavy armor so teammates can finish kills faster.

Field Medic

Field Medic is where team play changes the math. With a squad, it climbs to the top of the pile because nothing else keeps a group alive through high-difficulty boss phases the way its healing does. The Oxidizing Hive uses micro-drones that apply corrosive damage while sustaining allies, the Chemical Trap adds area denial, and the Oxidizing Swarm signature blankets a wide area. The catch is solo play. Weapon damage runs lower and cooldowns run longer, so going it alone as a straight healer is slow unless you build into the offensive corrosive path.

Tip: If you plan to run Field Medic mostly by yourself, lean the talent tree toward the poison and corrosion damage path so your heals double as offense.

B-tier: Bulwark

Bulwark is the dedicated tank, and it is exactly as durable as that sounds. The Phalanx Shield gives you and your team mobile cover, the Shockwave Spike can lock enemies down, and the Breach Combo signature deploys the RCS-12 automatic shotgun for close-range pushes. In specific breach operations and against bosses with unavoidable damage phases, it is genuinely useful.

The problem is flexibility. Its damage output trails the other three by a wide margin, so solo missions grind on, and in a squad the current meta favors killing enemies before you ever need to soak hits. You can clear almost any activity without touching it, which is what keeps it at the bottom. If you love being the wall that protects everyone else, it still delivers, just know you are trading tempo for safety.

Solo versus squad, at a break point

The single most important thing to understand is that the “best” class flips depending on how you play. Demolitionist and Vanguard shine on your own because they solve the survival problem without relying on anyone. Field Medic and, to a lesser degree, Bulwark earn their keep in coordinated groups where their support and defense have someone to protect.

SpecializationSolo strengthSquad strength
VanguardVery highVery high
DemolitionistVery highHigh
Field MedicLow to moderateVery high
BulwarkLowModerate

How this was ranked: placements weigh three things, versatility across game modes, raw damage output, and survivability, then adjust for how each class performs solo compared with a full team. A well-rounded squad still leans on a mix, typically a Vanguard for buffs and intel, a Field Medic for sustain, and a Demolitionist or two for damage. If you are starting fresh and unsure, Vanguard is the safest first pick, and you can branch out once you know how each system feels.
