Anime Expeditions Dark Mage: Best Build, Trait, and Lightning Lock

Everything needed to evolve Judar into his Sovereign form and lock his lightning field on permanently.

Dark Mage is the Mythic carry from the Villains update in Anime Expeditions, modeled on Judar from Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic. Most of his damage comes from a single passive, and once you know how to keep that passive running, he clears dense waves faster than almost anything else in Update 0.5.

Quick answer: Evolve Dark Mage into his Sovereign form, run the Unbound trait, and equip Magic Book, Shinigami Sword, and his exclusive Dark Scepter. In a stage, let him attack until he cycles into Lightning form after 8 hits, then set his targeting priority to None. This freezes his attack counter and keeps the lightning field on the path indefinitely.

Evolve Dark Mage into Dark Mage (Sovereign)

The build only works on the evolved unit, so this comes first. Once you own a Dark Mage, head to the Evolve station inside the Upgrades Chamber and trade in the required materials. The Magical Amulet is bought from the event shop with Villain Coins, while the colored Sprites are shared evolution materials used across many units.

MaterialAmount
Magical Amulet1
Sprite (Red)20
Sprite (Yellow)20
Sprite (Rainbow)1

After the trade completes, the unit becomes Dark Mage (Sovereign) and gains the upgraded version of its lightning passive. You will know it worked when the Sovereign portrait replaces the base card in your roster.

How the Lightning Orbs passive works

Dark Mage alternates between two forms every 8 regular attacks. His Ice form applies Freeze and Frostbite stacks and holds enemies in place, but nearly all of his real damage sits in his Lightning form.

When Lightning form is active, he lays a lightning arc across the path inside his range. Any enemy touching that arc takes damage per second based on his current DPS. Because he already hits hard, this ticking field melts crowds almost instantly.

ConditionLightning field damage per second
No exclusive gear25% of current DPS
Dark Scepter equipped50% of current DPS

The field can also crit, which is where the huge damage showcases come from. That doubling from the Dark Scepter is why the exclusive equipment matters more on this unit than on most other Mythics.

The Lightning Lock: keep the field on permanently

The trick that makes Dark Mage so strong is stopping his form cycle while he is in Lightning form. Setting his targeting to None halts his attacks, which stops the 8-attack counter, so he never rotates back to Ice. The lightning arc simply stays on the path and keeps ticking.

Place Dark Mage covering the longest straight stretch of the path so the field reaches as many enemies as possible.
Let him auto-attack until the counter flips him into Lightning form. This takes 8 attacks, so his early damage is weak until it triggers.
The moment Lightning form activates, open his targeting menu and set priority to None. Do not do this while he is still in Ice form, or you will lock the weaker state and waste the placement.

Leave targeting alone. Only switch it back on if you need single-target focus or shield damage on a boss.

Note: avoid upgrading Dark Mage at the exact instant he enters Lightning form. Upgrades do not always preserve the orb state, and hitting one at the wrong moment can reset the timing and force you to rebuild it. Aim to finish key upgrades before you fully lean on the lock.

Best Dark Mage build: trait, equipment, and stats

Because the field scales off his DPS, the whole build pushes raw damage. Unbound is the standard trait since it adds a large damage multiplier, and its single-placement limit is a non-issue when you only ever want one Dark Mage anyway.

SlotPick
TraitUnbound
Unit equipmentDark Scepter
Equipment slot 1Magic Book
Equipment slot 2Shinigami Sword or Three Swords From Hell

The Dark Scepter is the piece to prioritize, since it lifts the field from 25% to 50% of DPS per second. Shinigami Sword suits boss and tournament content, while Three Swords From Hell leans into crit for farming loops. When rerolling stats, the order that matters is straightforward.

  • Damage % first, because the lightning field scales directly off it.
  • Crit Chance and Crit Damage second, since the field can crit.
  • SPA reduction as a bonus, but never at the cost of a good Damage roll.

Team support for the lightning field

Dark Mage is a carry, not a solo unit. The supports around him exist to keep enemies inside the arc longer and to keep his DPS climbing. A slow unit is the single most valuable partner, because every extra second an enemy spends in the field multiplies total damage.

RoleOptions
SlowPuppet, Salmon Sorcerer, String Demon
Magic buffShadow, Megumi, Forbidden Teacher
Support DPS8th Sword, Itachi, Elf Mage
Shield breakItachi, Crow
EconomyRamen Guy

A magic buffer such as Megumi keeps his damage number high, and a coin farmer like Ramen Guy funds his upgrades faster so the lock comes online sooner. Leave a flex slot open to patch whatever a specific mission is missing.

The one real gap is shields. The lightning field deals no shield damage, so pair him with a shield-breaker like Itachi or Crow rather than expecting him to handle shielded enemies alone. If a strong secondary carry is holding the best Shinigami Katana, note that Itachi often scales harder off it than Dark Mage does.

How to get Dark Mage

Dark Mage lives on the limited Villain Banner in the Summon chamber, not the standard banner. He is one of four Mythic units on the banner, with a 0.25% chance per pull.

Pulls cost Villain coins, which come mainly from Villain chests dropped by bosses that spawn during levels. You can also earn coins through the Villain Banner Event and by redeeming active codes. Farm coins during the event window, since the banner will not stay past it.

Once you have the unit evolved, geared, and locked into Lightning form, he holds one of the strongest wave-clear positions in Update 0.5. Build him while the interaction lasts, keep a shield-breaker on standby, and let the field do the heavy lifting.
