The full breakdown of mutation effects, weather-event sources, and how to strip a mutation off any egg, plant, or capybara.

Mutations are the fastest way to push your damage per second (DPS) and money per second (MPS) higher in Capybaras vs Plants. Each mutation stamps a fixed multiplier onto an egg, capybara, or plant, and there are more than ten of them in the game right now, including Gold, Toasty, Moonlit, Chilly, and Celestial. They come from two main sources, weather events and Mutation Scrolls, and they only ever apply to items sitting on your plot.

Quick answer: Keep eggs, capybaras, and plants placed on your plot during an active weather event to catch its mutation, or use a Mutation Scroll to force a specific one. To wipe a mutation, buy a Mutation Sponge from the Gear Shop for $10k and apply it to the item.

What mutations do to eggs, capybaras, and plants

A mutation changes the item it lands on and gives it a distinct look. The effect depends on which of the three item types is carrying it. Nothing in your inventory can mutate, so items have to be out on your plot for any of this to happen.

Item typeWhat the mutation changes
EggsA mutated egg has a higher chance of hatching into a capybara that already carries a mutation.
CapybarasA mutated capybara deals more DPS than its base version and gets a unique appearance.
PlantsA mutated plant earns more money per second and sells for a higher value.

Every mutation and its multiplier

Each mutation applies the same multiplier to both a capybara’s DPS and a plant’s MPS. The table below lists the confirmed mutations, their exact multipliers, and where they come from. A few high-tier mutations are upgrades that can only be layered onto an item already carrying a specific lower-tier mutation, and they replace it when applied.

MutationMultiplierSource
Moonlit1.3xNight weather event
Snowy1.4xSnowy weather event
Toasty1.4xHeatwave weather event
Tranquil1.45xZen weather event
Shocked1.6xThunder weather event
Celestial1.7xMeteor Shower event; only applies to items that already have Moonlit, which it replaces
Permafrost1.8xBlizzard event; only applies to items that already have Chilly, which it replaces
Scorched1.9xRed Sun event; only applies to items that already have Toasty, which it replaces
Gold2xObtainable naturally and during Admin Abuse events
GlitchedNot yet confirmedGlitch weather event

Gold is the strongest confirmed multiplier at 2x, and it is one of the few you can pick up during normal play rather than a niche event. More weather events and their matching mutations exist in the game, and their exact effects will slot into this list once verified.

How to get mutations

There are two dependable ways to apply mutations, plus a limited third route tied to special events.

Weather events

The game runs more than ten weather events, each linked to a specific mutation. While an event is active, newly spawned plants can appear already carrying that event’s mutation, and plants already sitting in your base have a chance to mutate too. Capybaras on the plot can also catch the mutation during the event. You can review every event through the in-game Weather Index.

Mutation Scrolls

A Mutation Scroll lets you apply one specific mutation to an egg, plant, or capybara of your choice, which removes the randomness of waiting for the right weather. You can pick up Mutation Scrolls from the Traveling Merchant, Playtime Rewards, and Daily Rewards.

Admin Abuse events

Two weather events, Taco Rain and Reverse Sun, only appear during the Capybaras vs Plants Admin Abuse event. The mutations those two events apply cannot be obtained any other way, so attending the event is the only path to them.

How to remove a mutation

If a mutation is not the one you want, you can strip it with a Mutation Sponge. It is a Rare item sold in the Gear Shop for $10k, and each Sponge clears the mutation from a single egg, plant, or capybara. Buy another Sponge for every additional item you want to reset.

You will know a mutation applied correctly when the item’s appearance changes and its DPS or MPS value climbs by the listed multiplier. When you use a Mutation Sponge, the item drops back to its base look and base numbers, confirming the mutation is gone.
