GRAIN ROT Weapons Ranked: Best Picks for Deep Layers Runs

Every confirmed GRAIN ROT weapon sorted by combat value, demolition speed, and how much noise it makes underground.

Every confirmed GRAIN ROT weapon sorted by combat value, demolition speed, and how much noise it makes underground.

Weapons in GRAIN ROT do two jobs. They break furniture so you can feed the Grinder, and they buy you space when a Corrupted enemy closes in. Because you play as a Living Spark inside a fragile wooden vessel, staying alive matters more than racking up kills, so the “best” weapon is the one that clears loot fast while keeping you quiet enough to escape.

Quick answer: The Hammer is the best all-round weapon because it demolishes objects quickly and still hits hard in melee. Pair it with the Sword for holding doorways, keep the Gun holstered for Elites or emergencies, and drop the starter Mallet as soon as a stronger option unlocks.

Every GRAIN ROT weapon ranked

Here is the full weapon lineup as it stands at launch, sorted from strongest to weakest. Noise is a real stat here, since Corrupted enemies hunt by sound and a loud swing can pull a distant pack straight to you.

HammerSFast demolition plus strong melee, the best generalistMedium-high
SwordSReliable kills in doorway chokepointsMedium
GunAHeavy burst damage at range for emergenciesHigh
MalletBStarter demolition tool, weak against CorruptedMedium

The shop also stocks a Scrap Blaster, observed at a price of 350 gold. Expect the roster to grow as you descend into deeper layers and unlock more of the Outpost.

Hammer: The best all-round weapon

The Hammer is the weapon most players should build around. It smashes furniture noticeably faster than the Mallet, which shortens every loot loop and means fewer noise events per run. When a pack of Corrupted crashes your session, it doubles as a credible melee tool, so you rarely have to switch weapons mid-fight. Its only real downside is the occasional loud impact.

Sword: The doorway anchor

The Sword trades a little demolition speed for safer, steadier combat. It shines when you hold a doorway and let enemies funnel toward you, especially behind a blocking construct that slows their approach. It is excellent for picking off Corrupted by surprise in tight spaces, but poor for breaking objects, so keep it as a combat pick rather than a grinding tool. Open rooms are where swords fall apart, so pull every fight to a door frame.

Gun: The emergency button

The Gun deals the highest single-target damage of any weapon, which makes it tempting. The catch is noise. Firing without moving is a reliable way to summon Corrupted from across the floor, so it is a poor choice for routine grinding. Save it for Elite targets or a wipe-in-progress where you need to punch through fast and then run.

Tip: Set a house rule with your crew early, such as guns only after extract is called or on Elites. It keeps someone from accidentally alerting the whole floor mid-run.

Mallet and bare hands: The bottom of the list

The Mallet is what Biggie and Murch hand you during the tutorial, and it does its early job well enough. It breaks weak Outpost constructs, tutorial props, and shallow furniture at a fine rhythm. Against the Corrupted it deals pathetic damage, so replace it the moment a stronger weapon becomes available.

Fighting with bare hands or emotes offers nothing. There is no demolition value and no combat value, and even the Mallet is a clear upgrade over swinging empty fists.

How to unlock weapons

Weapons come from Outpost inventory tier rooms and Murch’s shop, not from random loot drops in the Deep Layers. The Mallet is the tutorial default, while the Hammer, Sword, and Gun open up as your inventory tiers rise, with the Sword tied to a tier three inventory room. Better shop stock also becomes available as you upgrade Murch’s shop room.

Useful gear like weapons is rare and expensive, and you lose whatever you are carrying if you die on a run. If you are hauling a weapon or a compass, prioritize surviving and getting home over grabbing one more pile of Scrap. You can grab the game on its official Steam page.

A four-player loadout that works

In co-op, spreading weapon roles across the team keeps runs clean and quiet. One player demolishes and feeds the Grinder, one holds chokepoints, one carries the ranged option for emergencies, and one scouts and handles fuse or shop sweeps.

RoleWeaponJob
DemolisherHammerClears furniture and feeds the Grinder
AnchorSwordHolds doors and owns chokepoints
FlexGunHolstered until an Elite or a wipe
ScoutLight kitPathfinding, fuse and shop runs

Whatever you carry, remember that these tools are built for defense and escape first. Playing aggressively in the Deep Layers is one of the fastest ways to break your vessel and lose the whole haul, so treat every weapon as a means to get out alive rather than a reason to stay and fight.
