The catch is timing. The game is arriving on PlayStation 5 and PC first, and Microsoft’s consoles sit behind a contractual wall for the first year.

The “nobody needs Xbox” controversy, and the walkback

Around ChinaJoy that year, an anonymous developer was reported to have dismissed the platform, saying “nobody needs” Xbox and describing Microsoft’s ecosystem as difficult to work with and unpopular in Asia.
S-GAME moved quickly to distance itself from that framing. The studio did not flatly deny that someone made the remark, but it stressed that the comment did not reflect the company’s values and that no platforms had been ruled out.
The studio also pushed back earlier on the “PlayStation exclusive” label itself, noting that it is an independent developer. At the time, S-GAME described PlayStation’s role as help with testing and marketing rather than a binding lock. The exclusivity terms visible in the launch trailer came later.
Physical disc and pre-order bonuses
Anyone hoping for a boxed copy should temper expectations. There are currently no signs of a physical disc release, and no announcement has been made about one. Given the wider industry shift toward digital-only distribution, Phantom Blade Zero looks set to be a download-only title for now.
Pre-orders are live on PlayStation 5. Booking early unlocks the Treasure Basin accessory and the Legacy outfit as bonuses. Neither bonus is exclusive in the long run, since both items can also be earned through normal in-game progression, so pre-ordering only saves you the effort rather than granting anything you cannot otherwise get.
For Xbox players, the short version stays the same. The game is not off the table, but the timed deal means the wait runs into late 2027 at the earliest, and PC remains the only guaranteed way to play on release day.
