Mortal Shell 2: How to Unlock the Ascension Trophy (Mango Secret)

Track down Mether's Flesh, feed the Nightfish, and claim the Mango before the run ends.

Track down Mether’s Flesh, feed the Nightfish, and claim the Mango before the run ends.

Ascension is one of five bronze trophies in Mortal Shell 2 that you can permanently miss in a playthrough. Its description gives nothing away — “Discover the secret of the Mango” — and the chain behind it involves a hidden item, a hidden cave, and a fish that eats you. The Mango itself spawns once per run.

Quick answer: Grab Mether’s Flesh from the hidden chamber below the crater near the Pulsing Caves Beacon, then offer it to the Nightfish in the swamp cave east of the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon. It swallows you into the Mango Sanctuary, where interacting with the giant Mango unlocks Ascension.

What you need before starting

The whole chain hinges on a single key item. Everything else is travel and a bit of combat.

RequirementDetail
Key itemMether’s Flesh
First locationPulsing Caves Beacon, Sanguine Caverns (northernmost Corrupt Gate)
Second locationSwamp east of the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon
Fast travelBoth Beacons must be unlocked
TrophyAscension (Bronze) — missable, one Mango per playthrough

Note: the Slayer Seal disables achievements while equipped. If you are wearing it, unequip it before you pick up the Mango, or the trophy will not fire.

Where to find Mether’s Flesh

Fast travel to the Pulsing Caves Beacon, the first Beacon inside the northernmost Corrupt Gate. This is your entry point into the Sanguine Caverns area.

From the Beacon, look for the crater ringed by Lithopod enemies. You do not need to fight them — jump straight into the crater. Any that chase you will usually die from the drop.
Clear out whatever is waiting at the bottom, then keep descending rather than walking into the open area ahead. The path you want branches off before that.

Scan the walls for the exploding creatures clustered along this stretch. Let them detonate on their own instead of dragging them into a fight — the blast is part of the puzzle.

Once they blow, swing at the stalactites sitting behind them. Breaking those open reveals a concealed passage with a chest inside.
Step into the passage and turn right. Mether’s Flesh is sitting there, and picking it up produces an “Acquired Item” notification confirming you have it.

Feeding the Nightfish to reach the Mango Sanctuary

Mether’s Flesh has no use where you found it. The item is an offering, and the only thing that accepts it lives on the other side of the map.

Fast travel to the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon and head east into the swamp. Expect roaming enemies across the water — you can fight or run past them, neither affects the trophy.
Watch the right-hand side of the swamp as you move through it. A cave entrance opens up along that edge; go inside and you will find the Nightfish waiting.
Walk up to the Nightfish and offer it Mether’s Flesh. A confirmation prompt appears with the item selected — choose yes.

The fish swallows you whole and drops you inside the Mango Sanctuary. There is a single route through the dungeon, so just keep moving forward until the giant Mango appears.
Interact with it. A “New Item Acquired” popup for the Mango confirms the pickup, and Ascension unlocks at the same moment.

What the Mango does after you get it

The Mango is not just a trophy token. It slots into two different roles, and you have to pick one.

SlotEffect
Active itemRestores 50% of your health, usable once
Passive itemUnlocks the Mango Mask cosmetic, equipped from the Change Masks tab at any Beacon

Since only one Mango spawns per playthrough, spending it as a heal means giving up the mask for that run. The trophy pops on pickup regardless of which way you use it.

Why Ascension fails to unlock

  • The Slayer Seal was equipped when you picked up the Mango — achievements are disabled while it is on, so unequip it and the game returns to its normal state.
  • You reached the Sanctuary but walked past the giant Mango without interacting with it.
  • You finished the game and rolled into New Game Plus. Missed items reset, so the Mango has to be found again on the new cycle.

Ascension is recoverable, unlike the Tar Golem’s “No, You Still Can’t Win” trophy, which is gone for good if you miss it in the prologue. If your first run ends without the Mango, the same crater, the same fish, and the same dungeon are all waiting in NG+ — your gear and valuables carry over, so the return trip is short.
