Gragu is one of the earliest Shells you can pick up in Mortal Shell 2, and it turns into a heavy-hitting bruiser when you build it around the Veteran’s Battle Axe. This setup trades speed for raw damage, leaning on the Staggering Blow skill, big heavy-attack chains, and a throwable axe to punish enemies in mid- to close-range fights.
Quick answer: Run Gragu with the Veteran’s Battle Axe and Naylshotte, equip the Untarnished Seal, stack the Lost Clotstone, Berserker’s Stone, Auspicious Stone, and Headsman’s Stone, then max Escalation and use Staggering Blow inside the parry stagger window.
Unlock Gragu before you build it
Gragu is locked behind a short quest, so you cannot equip this Shell straight away. You need the Heart of Vatra first.

| Slot | Choice |
|---|---|
| Shell | Gragu |
| Primary weapon | Veteran’s Battle Axe |
| Secondary weapon | Naylshotte |
| Seal | Untarnished Seal |
The whole build revolves around Gragu’s Staggering Blow. Stagger an enemy with the Untarnished Seal, then land Staggering Blow inside that window for a huge damage spike. Everything else here supports that loop.
Veteran’s Battle Axe: the primary weapon
The Veteran’s Battle Axe is the heavy weapon of choice here, and it drops from the King’s Crypt dungeon. It hits harder than the Axatana that many players lean on, though it swings slower in exchange. Among the heavy options, which include the Obsidian Hammer, The Iconoclast, and the Great Martyr’s Blade, the Battle Axe is the most forgiving. It has a slightly quicker swing animation, cleaner combos, and a strong running attack.
Pair it with the Lost Clotstone so you can throw the axe. That single ability gives a slow melee weapon a reliable ranged burst and lets you create distance mid-fight.

Naylshotte: the sidearm
The Naylshotte is the sidearm you receive during the prologue, so it is available from the start. Slot the Barrage Stone to make its heavy round detonate and scatter projectiles, which can explode up to three times with each projectile dealing up to 8 splash damage.
Add the Volatile Fragment on top of that. Enemies killed by ranged attacks then explode for up to 35 splash damage, which helps clear groups without switching off the Naylshotte.
Untarnished Seal: why it beats the Infinite Seal
Only two Seals can parry or block normal enemy attacks, the Untarnished Seal and the Infinite Seal. Both open the stagger window this build depends on. The Untarnished Seal is the pick because it avoids the slower animation of the Infinite Seal, so you can react faster and get into Staggering Blow before the window closes.

Best Tarstones for the Gragu heavy build
You can equip up to 10 Tarstones. The ten below cover the axe’s throw, sidearm splash, critical output, and low-health scaling that makes Gragu dangerous in long fights.
| Tarstone | Effect |
|---|---|
| Lost Clotstone | Adds a throw to the Veteran’s Battle Axe for 200 splash damage and 300% weapon damage, costing 60 resolve (drops to 40 when upgraded). |
| Inflamed Clawstone | Infuses your weapon with Burn for the next 4-8 strikes for 30 resolve. Burn becomes permanent at level 3. |
| Parasitic Stone | Grants up to 3 Leech stacks per kill. |
| Barrage Stone | Sidearm heavy skill drops an exploding round above the target for 40 resolve, exploding 2-3 times for 4-8 splash damage per projectile. |
| Emberseed Stone | Infuses your sidearm with Burn for 20 resolve. Becomes permanent at level 3. |
| Volatile Fragment | Enemies killed by the ranged weapon explode for 15-35 splash damage. |
| Auspicious Stone | Increases melee critical chance by 15% to 18%. |
| Headsman’s Stone | Increases melee critical damage by 50% to 100%. |
| Berserker’s Stone | Deals 130% to 165% melee damage while health is below 35% to 50%. |
| Siegebreaker’s Stone | Increases ranged stagger damage by 50% to 150%. |
Note: The Berserker’s Stone is one of the strongest picks here because it scales your damage as your health drops, rewarding an aggressive, front-foot playstyle rather than punishing it.

Gragu skill tree points
The skill spread pushes Staggering Blow damage, cheaper casts, and health recovery so you can trade blows safely. Spend your points across all four tiers as follows.
Tier 1
| Skill (level) | Effect |
|---|---|
| Escalation (max) | Staggering Blow deals 170% damage. |
| Bloodthirst (2) | Kills replenish Gragu’s Revered Heart by 50%. |
| Heartwork (2) | Gragu is immune to Bloodcurse. |
Tier 2
| Skill (level) | Effect |
|---|---|
| Attunement (2) | Staggering Blow costs 30% less. |
| Harvest (3) | Revered Heart restores 30 more health and can be used up to 4 times. |
| Maniac (1) | Melee damage against new enemies increased by 120%. |
Tier 3
| Skill (level) | Effect |
|---|---|
| Anger (2) | Staggering Blow inflicts 5 stacks of Weak and 5 stacks of Fragile. |
| Bloodlust (max) | After a Revered Heart, Gragu gains 15 Warp stacks, has a 50% chance to cure all negative effects, and his next melee hit deals 200% damage. |
Tier 4
| Skill (level) | Effect |
|---|---|
| Heartless (2) | Staggering Blow instantly kills small and medium humanoids and restores 15 health. |
| Hunger (2) | Critical hit chance up 40% while the Revered Heart is depleted. |
| Fortify (2) | Resting at a beacon restores the Revered Heart for two uses. |

How to play the build
Bait an attack, block it with the Untarnished Seal to stagger the enemy, then drop Staggering Blow during that opening for the biggest hit. Use the Naylshotte with the Barrage Stone to soften groups from range, and throw the axe with the Lost Clotstone when you need distance or want to knock enemies off ledges. Because the Berserker’s Stone rewards low health, you do not need to play cautiously once a boss’s damage output is manageable. Lean into the aggression, keep the Revered Heart cycling for Bloodlust, and let the critical Tarstones do the rest.
