The PlaySide RTS revealed live gameplay, four playable factions, and a lineup of show heroes ahead of its early 2027 launch.

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a real-time strategy game from PlaySide Studios set across the Seven Kingdoms, and it now has its first look at actual gameplay after a run of cinematic footage. The reveal arrived during Gamescom Opening Night Live, showing off the factions you can lead, the show characters you can deploy as heroes, and the core loop of building armies to claim the Iron Throne.

Quick answer: War for Westeros lets you command House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or the Army of the Dead in solo and multiplayer RTS battles. It is due to release on Steam in early 2027, with a beta planned but not yet dated.

Playable factions and hero characters

You pick one of four Great Houses or forces, and each plays differently. Every faction has its own armies, buildings, mechanics, and playstyle drawn from its identity in the series, so the strategy shifts depending on who you command. The gameplay reveal also confirmed a set of familiar faces as playable heroes, each with unique abilities.

FactionConfirmed heroes
House StarkRobb Stark, Jon Snow, Ghost, Grey Wind
House LannisterJaime Lannister, Tywin Lannister
House TargaryenDaenerys Targaryen
White Walkers / Army of the DeadThe Night King

The setup follows the alternate-history angle teased in earlier footage, where battles are not bound to how events played out in the show or books. That includes matchups the series never fully delivered, such as putting Jon Snow and the Night King back into direct conflict on your terms.

How matches play out

You take the role of a commander and make the standard RTS decisions. That means training units, securing resources, constructing buildings, and capturing territory from enemy forces. Heroes act as powerful pieces you deploy alongside your armies, and winning comes down to adapting your approach to counter what your opponents are doing.

The design leans into asymmetry rather than mirror matchups. Each side has distinct strengths, so a Stark army does not fight the same way as the dead, and part of the challenge is playing to the identity of whichever force you choose. Free-for-all matches also let you forge alliances or turn on rivals, with the pitch describing power struggles where trust does not last.

You can play solo against the game or take on other players in multiplayer skirmish. Online co-op and online multiplayer are both listed as supported modes.

Release window, platform, and beta

War for Westeros is confirmed for PC through Steam, where it is scheduled to release in early 2027. It was originally targeting 2026 before PlaySide pushed it back to reach the level of polish the studio wants for both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans. You can follow updates and wishlist the game on its Steam store page.

A beta is also planned. Specific details, including timing and how to sign up, have not been revealed yet, so there is no confirmed beta date at this point.

Note: War for Westeros is a separate project from Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, the action-RPG that launched earlier. This one is a classic real-time strategy game built around commanding houses and heroes, not an RPG.

With gameplay finally on show, the shape of the game is clearer: four distinct factions, recognizable heroes with their own abilities, and an RTS structure that invites you to rewrite the wars of Westeros. The next thing to watch for is beta details, followed by the early 2027 release on Steam.
