Dead Rails Class Mastery Update Explained

How the new Mastery system levels up the Cowboy, Miner, Doctor, and Vampire classes, plus every upgrade in each tree.

How the new Mastery system levels up the Cowboy, Miner, Doctor, and Vampire classes, plus every upgrade in each tree.

Dead Rails now lets you level individual classes and unlock a full tree of perks for each one. The Class Mastery system launches on the Cowboy, Doctor, Miner, and Vampire, giving each a mix of passive bonuses, active abilities, and a single capstone perk at the top of the tree.

Quick answer: Open the class selection screen, pick Cowboy, Doctor, Miner, or Vampire, then press the Mastery button to view and unlock that class’s upgrade tree. Each class runs from level 0 to level 10 and ends in a capstone perk.

How Class Mastery works

Class Mastery is accessed from the class selection interface. Each supported class has its own Mastery button, and selecting it opens that class’s upgrade list. The Cowboy tree, for example, spans levels 0 through 10, and the other classes follow the same structure of stacked perks that build toward a final capstone.

Perks fall into a few distinct categories. Item perks add a starting resource, Passive perks apply automatically, Ability perks give you an active skill you trigger in a run, Upgrade perks improve an existing ability, and the Capstone sits at the top of each tree as the strongest single reward.

Cowboy Mastery upgrades

The Cowboy tree is built around fast, aggressive gunplay. It combines extra ammo perks with active abilities like Dead Eye, which is effective against groups of zombies packed along the train tracks. Loyal Steed sits at the top as the class capstone.

Miner Mastery upgrades

The Miner tree leans into resource gathering and area control. Perks like Spare Coal add starting fuel, while Tremor Strike and Canary’s Warning give the Miner active tools to use against zombie hordes in town. Extra coal drops from mining rocks stack up quickly with the passive perks. Mother Lode is the capstone.

Doctor Mastery upgrades

The Doctor tree is built for support play and arrives alongside a set of Doctor class reworks. Healing Aura is the standout active ability, and it heals nearby allies, including a horse companion. Lingering Aura and Potent Remedy extend and strengthen that effect, while Mass Revive covers team recovery. Physician, Heal Thyself is the capstone.

Vampire Mastery upgrades

The Vampire tree mixes durability with mobility and stealth. Exsanguinate is a dash attack you can throw at zombies, and Umbral Shroud makes you undetectable, which is useful during the daytime when the class is otherwise more exposed. Creature of the Day is the capstone.

For now, Class Mastery is limited to the Cowboy, Doctor, Miner, and Vampire, so the trees above cover the full set of perks currently available. Each capstone marks the end of its tree, and reaching it confirms a class is fully mastered. The system arrives as part of a wider update that also rebalances several classes, with the Doctor seeing dedicated reworks tied to its new Mastery perks.
