The permanence matters. There is no known way to remove, swap, or reroll a fruit once it has been eaten, so decide before you consume it rather than after. Holding the fruit in your inventory does nothing to your character until you use it.

Everything for this run sits inside Anchor Town, so you do not need a boat or a second island. The quest NPC stands on the raised stone platforms behind the row of houses, and the Rusty Shovel is on the ground directly below that platform. If the chest is not there, the quest was not completed and one object is still buried.
The common failure is a dig spot that refuses to register even with the shovel equipped. Hit it with a Strong Punch to reset the object, then dig again. That clears the stuck state without abandoning the quest.
Other ways to get a Cursed Fruit
Calvin’s quest is a one-time source, so a second or third fruit has to come from somewhere else. All the remaining routes cost money or luck.
