Elder Dragon Greyoll sits asleep in Greyoll’s Dragonbarrow with a health bar the size of a small country and a rune payout no early-game enemy comes close to matching. She is also reachable at level 1, without beating a single boss, thanks to a portal in eastern Limgrave. The trick that turns her into a repeatable farm is timing: rest at a Site of Grace fast enough after the killing blow and the runes land in your pocket while the dragon gets back up.
Quick answer: Bleed Greyoll’s tail down with the Flail while wearing Radagon’s Soreseal, eat a Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot right before she dies, then mount Torrent and rest at the Fort Faroth Site of Grace before her death animation finishes. You collect 50,000+ runes and she respawns for the next loop.
Why the Greyoll grace reset works
Greyoll has roughly 88,000 HP, which no level 1 weapon can chew through with raw damage. Blood loss ignores that problem. Each bleed proc removes a fixed chunk of her health, so a weapon that builds blood loss quickly kills her in a couple of minutes regardless of your stats.
The reset part is separate. Resting at a Site of Grace respawns world enemies, and Greyoll’s death is slow enough that resting during her collapse animation restores her while the rune reward has already been credited. That leaves you standing next to a live dragon with a full rune payout, ready to do it again.

Add to Google Preferences →Rune payout per loop
| Kill | Runes |
|---|---|
| Greyoll alone | 50,000 |
| Greyoll plus the five smaller dragons around her | About 70,000 |
| New Game Plus | 100,000 and up |
A single clean loop with the Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot active lands around 65,000 runes, which is enough to take a fresh character from level 9 to level 31 in one visit to the Site of Grace. Repeat it and level 150 is a matter of loops, not hours of combat.
What you need before heading to Caelid
| Item | Where it comes from | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Torrent (Spectral Steed Whistle) | Melina’s cutscene at Gatefront Ruins | Traversal, spiritspring jumps, and the sprint back to the grace |
| Flail | Carriage chest near Gatefront Ruins | Bleed weapon; needs 10 Strength, 18 Dexterity |
| Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot | Corpse on the beach below The First Step | +30% rune gain for 3 minutes |
| Radagon’s Soreseal | Inside Fort Faroth | +5 Vigor, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity; increases damage taken |
Starting as a Samurai skips the weapon hunt entirely, since the Uchigatana already causes blood loss. Picking the Lands Between Rune as your keepsake also hands you 3,000 free runes on the way out of the tutorial. Neither is required, but both save time.

Bleeding Greyoll and timing the grace reset

How to confirm the reset worked
The grace menu opens and your rune counter jumps by roughly 50,000 to 70,000. Back out of the menu and look behind you: Greyoll is lying in place with a full health bar again, ready for another pass. If the runes arrived but the dragon is gone, you rested too late and will need to reload the area by fast travelling before she returns.
Reasons the loop fails
- Eating the Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot too early, so the three-minute window expires before the kill lands.
- Using a weapon that does not cause blood loss — Greyoll’s health pool makes normal damage impractical at low level.
- Dying on the ride back to the grace. Radagon’s Soreseal raises the damage you take, and the bats near Fort Faroth hit hard.
- Reaching the Site of Grace after the death animation has finished, which spends the kill instead of resetting it.
Where to spend the runes
Vigor first, all the way to 40. Survivability is the only thing keeping a character this over-levelled from dying to enemies scaled for a much later part of the game, especially while the Soreseal is equipped. After that, push whichever stat your weapon scales with.
| Stat | Soft caps |
|---|---|
| Vigor | 40, then 60 |
| Strength / Dexterity | 53, then 80 |
| Endurance (stamina return) | 50 |
Note: once your own Strength and Dexterity comfortably cover your weapon, the Soreseal’s extra damage taken stops being a good trade. Swap it out for a defensive or rune-gain talisman at that point.
When to move on from Greyoll
Greyoll’s payout is fixed, so the loop gets less impressive as level costs climb. The usual replacement is Mohgwyn Palace, reached by finishing enough of White-Faced Varre’s questline to receive the Pureblood Knight’s Medal. From the Palace Approach Ledge-Road Site of Grace you can shoot the giant bird below with any bow and watch it run off the cliff for over 11,000 runes, resetting it at the grace in seconds. The Albinauric field nearby scales even better once you have a weapon that can clear a crowd in one swing, and the Golden Scarab talisman adds a permanent 20% rune bonus to everything you kill there.
Until then, the dragon is hard to beat. It costs nothing to reach, needs no boss kills, and one afternoon of resets covers the entire climb to 150.
