Gem staves used to be the throwaway magic weapon you crafted once and forgot about. That changed in Desktop 1.4.5.7, when each staff picked up its own behavior — and pairing one with a matching gem robe reshapes the projectile entirely. The right two-piece combination turns a starter wand into something that can carry a mage through every pre-Hardmode boss.
Quick answer: Craft the highest-tier gem staff your world’s ore allows, then equip the robe that matches the fight — Amethyst Robe for homing shots, Sapphire Robe for extra projectiles, Topaz Robe for explosions on impact.
What each gem robe does to your gem staff projectiles
The staff sets your damage, speed, and mana cost. The robe rewrites how the shot behaves once it leaves your hand. Three robes matter most for boss fights.
| Robe | Effect on gem staff shots | Best against |
|---|---|---|
| Amethyst Robe | Projectiles home in and track a target, curving after it mid-flight | Fast, dashing, or multi-part bosses |
| Sapphire Robe | Fires four projectiles per attack for concentrated single-target damage | Large, slow, single-hitbox bosses |
| Topaz Robe | Projectiles explode when they dissipate, adding area damage and knockback | Worms, swarms, and crowds |
Note: the homing and explosion effects stack with a staff’s own piercing. An Amber Staff already passes through one enemy, so an Amethyst Robe lets that pierced shot loop back around for extra hits on segmented or multi-part targets.

Each boss below has one pairing that clears it fastest. Where a fight has adds or extra hitboxes, piercing plus homing wins; where it is a single fat target, raw projectile count wins.
| Boss | Staff + robe | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| King Slime | Ruby Staff + Sapphire Robe | Four projectiles per cast land on one large hitbox for high single-target DPS |
| Eye of Cthulhu | Emerald Staff + Amethyst Robe | Fast homing shots keep tracking through the dash phase |
| Eater of Worlds | Amber Staff + Topaz Robe | Piercing shots hit multiple segments, then explode on dissipating — easily past 1,000 DPS |
| Brain of Cthulhu | Amber Staff + Amethyst Robe | Pierces Creepers and homes onto the Brain and its clones |
| Queen Bee | Emerald or Diamond Staff + Amethyst Robe | Homing keeps up with her charges while shots pierce the bee swarm |
| Skeletron | Amber Staff + Amethyst Robe | Shots pierce both hands and the skull, then circle back for repeat hits |
| Deerclops | Ruby Staff + Sapphire Robe | Maximum single-target damage on a slow, stationary-ish boss |
| Wall of Flesh | Diamond Staff + Topaz Robe | Explosions do heavy damage and the knockback keeps The Hungry off you |
Skeletron is the clearest demonstration of why piercing matters. A single Amber Staff shot can clip a hand, continue into the head, and — with the Amethyst Robe’s homing — swing back for another pass instead of vanishing off screen.

Tip: reforge for the Mythical modifier where you can afford it. The damage, knockback, and mana bonuses apply to the projectile before the robe effect is calculated.
Gem staff stats and crafting requirements
There are seven gem staves, one per gem. All of them except the Amber Staff are crafted at an Iron Anvil or Lead Anvil from eight gems and ten bars. Only the higher tiers auto-fire and pierce, which is why the low three rarely show up in boss loadouts.
| Staff | Damage | Mana | Use time | Pierces | Autofire |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amethyst | 15 | 5 | 37 | 0 | No |
| Topaz | 16 | 5 | 36 | 0 | No |
| Sapphire | 18 | 6 | 34 | 0 | Yes |
| Emerald | 19 | 6 | 32 | 1 | Yes |
| Amber | 21 | 7 | 28 | 1 | Yes |
| Ruby | 21 | 7 | 28 | 1 | Yes |
| Diamond | 23 | 8 | 26 | 1 | Yes |
| Staff | Ingredients |
|---|---|
| Amethyst Staff | 10 Copper Bar + 8 Amethyst |
| Topaz Staff | 10 Tin Bar + 8 Topaz |
| Sapphire Staff | 10 Silver Bar + 8 Sapphire |
| Emerald Staff | 10 Tungsten Bar + 8 Emerald |
| Amber Staff | 15 Sturdy Fossil + 8 Amber |
| Ruby Staff | 10 Gold Bar + 8 Ruby |
| Diamond Staff | 10 Platinum Bar + 8 Diamond |
Why your world may not have the staff you want
Ore generation caps what you can build. A normal world spawns only one metal from each ore pair, so just four of the seven staves are comfortably craftable without extra work. If your world rolled Copper, Silver, and Gold, the Tin, Tungsten, and Platinum staves are off the table until you source those bars another way.
- Crates, slime bonus drops, and the Extractinator can supply alternate metals, but only in small quantities.
- Shimmer can downgrade ore and gems, which can hand you the alternate type if it sits in the right spot in the downgrade chain.
The Amber Staff is a special case. Before Hardmode, Sturdy Fossils only come from the Extractinator, killing Tomb Crawlers, or opening Oasis Crates — there is no other route to them. That makes it the most effort-intensive of the seven, and also the one doing the most work in the Eater of Worlds, Brain of Cthulhu, and Skeletron fights.
Confirming the pairing is active
You do not get a UI prompt when a staff and robe line up, so check the projectiles themselves. With the Amethyst Robe on, shots visibly curve toward whatever you are aiming near instead of flying straight. The Sapphire Robe produces four distinct projectiles per cast rather than one. The Topaz Robe adds a burst at the end of a shot’s travel, and you will see enemies knocked back at the moment it pops.
If the shot still travels in a plain straight line and expires quietly, the robe is not equipped in your armor slots — a gem robe sitting in your inventory or a vanity slot does nothing. One more thing worth remembering during flooded arena fights: liquids slow gem staff projectiles down, same as most other projectiles in the game.
Nothing here requires post-Skeletron gear or a farming loop, which is the real appeal. A magic build that would normally limp along on the Wand of Sparking until Hardmode can instead run a fully equipped gem staff setup from King Slime straight through to the Wall of Flesh, swapping robes between fights instead of chasing new weapons.
