Every objective at the Crossroads Inn, the blank book trick, and the rewards that unlock A Monk and a Saint.

Between the Words is a short, dialogue-heavy quest that takes place entirely at the Crossroads Inn, where Coen brews a drink for Anca and then digs through her books. It looks like a simple reading scene, but one of the books on the table is blank, and the quest will not close until you work out what to do with it.

Quick answer: At the Crossroads Inn, brew a drink at the cooking pot and hand it to Anca, then inspect all four books on the table. When you reach the blank one, hold it over the candle flame to burn the invisible ink into view, which completes the quest and starts A Monk and a Saint.

Between the Words objectives and rewards

The quest has two tracked objectives, and only the second one is required to finish it. Preparing the drink is optional, so you can skip straight to the books if you are watching the clock.

How to complete Between the Words at the Crossroads Inn

Open the journal, select Between the Words, and track it so the Crossroads Inn is marked. The yellow objective marker on the map is your destination, and everything in the quest happens inside that one building.

Walk into the inn and find the cooking pot on the table. Interacting with it brews the warm drink, which is the only preparation the optional objective needs.
Bring the drink to Anca. She takes it, a short exchange plays out, and the journal switches over to the browsing objective.

Inspect the books laid out on the table one by one. Coen reads passages aloud from Vale Sangora in the Golden Age, Aurori Peregrini, or Pilgrims of the Dawn, Bellum Nox or the Night War, and Sancti Mihai Historia Vera.
Pick up the book whose pages appear empty and hold it over the candle burning on the table. The heat brings out the invisible ink, and the page opens as a readable document with a BACK button to close it.

What the hidden text about Saint Mihai reveals

The concealed passage rewrites the official account of Saint Mihai. Rather than the sanitized version in the other volumes, it states that he fought vrakhiri with a magic sword, and that both the man and the weapon were laid to rest in Svartrau. Coen makes it clear that repeating any of this is dangerous, warning that the words put a listener’s life and soul at risk.

The conversation that follows points you at a monk named Albertus, who is somewhere in the Middens. Anca treats him as the person most likely to fill in the rest of the story, and that name carries directly into the follow-up quest.

How to confirm the quest completed

Completion is signposted clearly. Once the conversation ends, a reward panel shows XP: 1,000 and Skill Points: 1, and Between the Words is marked as finished in the journal.

Immediately after that, A Monk and a Saint appears with the objective “Look for Albertus in the Middens”. If that new entry is not in your journal, the quest has not closed out.

Note: If the objective is still stuck on browsing, the usual cause is an unread book. All four volumes on the table need to be inspected, and the blank one only counts once you have held it to the candle and read the exposed text.

Time is the only real cost here. Actions in Vale Sangora advance the clock, so the drink, the reading, and the trip to the inn all eat into the day. The Skill Point and the lead on Albertus make it a cheap detour, but plan the run to the Middens around whether you would rather arrive as a human or as a Dawnwalker.
