Onimusha: Way of the Sword — Every Hidden Map Solution

Where every Old Drawing NPC stands, where all five hidden chests sit, and how to reveal them with Oni Vision.

Where every Old Drawing NPC stands, where all five hidden chests sit, and how to reveal them with Oni Vision.

The five Hidden Treasure Chance Encounters are the fiddliest side content in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Each one starts with an NPC handing Musashi an Old Drawing — a faded picture with an X on it — plus a vague map marker that only points at a general area. The chest itself stays invisible until you sweep the spot with Oni Vision, which is why people walk straight past four of these.

Quick answer: Collect Old Drawings No. 1 and 2 from the two NPCs in Gion and No. 3, 4, and 5 from the three NPCs in Shimogyo, then open the chests on the Kiyomizu-zaka Slope rooftop, at the small waterfall below Yasaka Pagoda, inside the temple gate near Kamo River – East, on the shrine balcony past Gojo Street – East, and on the top roof of Yasaka Pagoda.

Buy the Oni Vision skills before you start hunting

Three Special Skills decide whether this hunt takes ten minutes or an hour. Purchase Oni Vision: Treasures, Oni Vision: Treasures 2, and Oni Vision: Search Range at a Spirit Mirror as early as you can afford them. With all three active, hold L2/LT and tap R2/RT to light up buried and walled-off objects through geometry.

None of the five chests appear as a physical object in the world. You stand on the correct tile, pulse Oni Vision, and the container materialises. If nothing shows up, you are in the wrong spot rather than the wrong district — the marker circle is deliberately loose.

Note: Chance Encounters reset in New Game+, so all five have to be finished during your first run if you want the No Job Too Small trophy without extra work. Free roam also ends permanently once you accept the final mission, “The Clash At Rendaino”.

No. 1“At the top of Kiyomizu-zaka Slope”Rooftop above the alley by the Kiyomizu-zaka Slope Spirit Mirror
No. 2“Where the Buddhas overlook the flow”Base of the small waterfall down the stream from Yasaka Pagoda
No. 3“At the temple where dragons soar”Inside the temple gate near Kamo River – East, by the large closed door on the right
No. 4“The mountain temple of the dead”Balcony on the left side of the small shrine northeast of Gojo Street – East

The two Gion drawings: rooftop and waterfall

Both of the first two quests are handed out in Gion, and both chests sit within a short run of the district. Take them in order and you cover the whole eastern slope in one loop.

Speak to the woman standing in Gion to receive Old Drawing No. 1. The picture is muddy, but the X sits on a rooftop rather than at street level, which is the part most players misread.
Fast travel to the Kiyomizu-zaka Slope Spirit Mirror and find the alley beside it. A long ladder gets you onto the first roof, and a shorter second ladder takes you one level higher. Pulse Oni Vision on that upper roof to reveal the chest.

Return to Gion and talk to the man there for Old Drawing No. 2. This picture shows three things worth noting — the pagoda, a ladder, and a waterfall.
Head to the area below Yasaka Pagoda and follow the stream on your map until it drops into a small waterfall. Zooming the map in far enough makes the nearby ladders visible, which is the fastest way to line yourself up. Stand at the bottom of the falls and use Oni Vision to pull out the second chest.

The three Shimogyo drawings: temple, shrine balcony, and pagoda roof

The remaining quest givers are all in Shimogyo, and two of the three chests are guarded by Genma patrols. Clear the area first — trying to line up an Oni Vision pulse mid-fight wastes time.

Talk to the woman in Shimogyo for Old Drawing No. 3. It shows an X on a gate beside a tall wall, and the trick is that you need to search from the inner side of that wall, not the street.
Travel to the Kamo River – East Spirit Mirror and enter the large Genma-infested temple through the main door just east of it. Walk in and immediately turn right, head for the large closed door against the wooden wall, and use Oni Vision there.

Find the man in Shimogyo and take Old Drawing No. 4. His chest is the most annoying of the set, sitting past the Gojo Street – East Spirit Mirror in an area that is almost always crawling with Genma.
Take the long southern route around the area to reach the single small shrine-like building in the northeast. Do not go inside. Move around to its left side, where a narrow balcony looks out over eastern Kyoto, and pulse Oni Vision at the far end.

Speak to the second woman in Shimogyo for Old Drawing No. 5. This is the easiest of the five to place — the clue points straight at Yasaka Pagoda.

Enter the pagoda and climb the chain of interior ladders until you step out onto the upper roof. A few Genma wait at the top, so deal with them, then use Oni Vision on the pagoda’s southern side to uncover the last chest.

What the chests give you and how to confirm each one counted

Opening a chest plays the pickup pop-up and closes that Hidden Treasure quest immediately — there is no need to return to the NPC who gave you the drawing. The haul across the five includes Oni Treasure along with equipment upgrade materials such as Fine Silk Cloth, Fire Stone, and Tamahagane, all of which feed straight into sword and gauntlet enhancements.

If a chest refuses to appear, there are only a handful of causes worth checking.

  • You have not bought Oni Vision: Treasures, so the container never renders at all.
  • You are inside the map circle but on the wrong elevation — the rooftop, balcony, and pagoda chests all sit above street level.
  • You are outside the wall or gate instead of inside it, which is the usual failure on Hidden Treasure No. 3.
  • Oni Vision: Search Range is still unpurchased, leaving the pulse too short to reach the object from where you are standing.

Clear all five before you commit to the final mission. Once “The Clash At Rendaino” begins, Kyoto locks down for good, and while selecting Continue from the main menu after the credits drops you back in just before the finale, the Chance Encounter progress itself wipes the moment you roll into New Game+.
