Moonlighter 2: How to Free Masa in the Thief Trophy Quest

Craft the Aetherium Heart sword, smash the glass cell in Treasury Halls, and claim the Combat Rod recipe.

Craft the Aetherium Heart sword, smash the glass cell in Treasury Halls, and claim the Combat Rod recipe.

Masa is a returning character from the first Moonlighter, and in Moonlighter 2 he sits trapped inside a glass display case at the start of Treasury Halls, the second section of The Gallery dungeon. The Thief Trophy quest starts the moment you unlock that area, but you cannot finish it until you have made real progress into the Aeolia biome. The only tool that breaks his prison is a specific crafted weapon.

Quick answer: Craft the Aetherium Heart large sword using The King’s Left Mask plus 2,000 gold, equip it, enter Treasury Halls, and attack Masa’s glass cell to shatter it. Then finish your run and speak to Masa near the south staircase in Tresna.

What you need before you can free Masa

The sign beside Masa warns you not to strike the case with Aetherium, and that clue trips people up. You do not need Aetherium crystal relics, and in fact any Aetherium relics you pick up in Aeolia are destroyed automatically when you return home to Tresna. What actually breaks the glass is the Aetherium Heart, a large sword you craft in town.

Craft the Aetherium Heart sword

Complete a full run through Zephyr Fields in Aeolia and defeat its final boss, Senda. On victory, The King’s Left Mask appears next to the two loot chests the boss leaves behind.
Return to Tresna and talk to Julien, which opens up the Aetherium Heart recipe. Craft the sword using The King’s Left Mask and 2,000 gold. This weapon exists mainly for this quest, so do not worry about its combat value.

Break the glass and speak to Masa

Equip the Aetherium Heart and launch a run into Treasury Halls in The Gallery. Head to Masa’s capsule at the start of the area.
Attack the glass cell with the sword. The case shatters and Masa is freed, but the quest is not finished yet.
End your run and return to Tresna. Go to the south of the map and find Masa standing at the foot of the staircase, near Julien. Speak with him to close out the Thief Trophy.

You know it worked when Masa is out of his cell, wandering town and chatting with the other residents of Tresna, and the task registers as complete after you talk to him.

Reward: the Combat Rod recipe

Finishing the quest unlocks the recipe for the Combat Rod, a weapon in the Spear category. It looks and plays much like the basic spear, but its spearheads hit noticeably harder. When you use the special move to call the spearheads back, they deal 65 percent damage at the weapon’s base level and travel back along a straight line to your spear. Once they return, they can rotate around you as a short defensive barrier.

If you have not unlocked Aeolia yet

You cannot craft the Aetherium Heart until Aeolia is open, since The King’s Left Mask only drops there. Access comes from pushing the main story forward. Keep selling relics to meet the gold requirements of The Endless Vault, and Aeolia becomes available as you progress toward the final biome.
