Every run in Wanderburg starts with a choice that shapes the rest of it. Your Captain is not decoration. Each one carries a passive that changes how you deal damage, move, heal, farm Gold, or spawn allies, and almost all of them pair that upside with a real drawback. Picking the wrong one can quietly sink a promising build, so it pays to know what each Captain gives up.
Quick answer: Patchy The Pirate, Racer Ruth, and Empress are the strongest Captains right now. Their bonuses scale hard and their downsides can be played around, which makes them the safest way to spend your Silver.

Wanderburg Captains tier list
| Tier | Captains |
|---|---|
| S | Patchy The Pirate, Racer Ruth, Empress |
| A | The Count, Tankbert, Huntress, Pyromaniac |
| B | Norbert The Normal, Lumberjack, Dieter The Drunk, Kapitalistus Maximus |
| C | Time Witch, Sire Jonah |
How this was ranked: Captains are judged on survivability, movement, and scaling. A high placement means the bonus stays strong deep into a run and the tradeoff can be managed with the right build. Low placements go to Captains whose penalty cancels most of the benefit or who offer no gameplay effect at all.
Freshness: This ranking reflects the Early Access build of Wanderburg as of September 2026. The Duelist has not been fully tested yet and is left unranked until its passive can be measured in real runs.

Patchy The Pirate doubles your Cannon damage, which is enormous for any cannon-focused fort. The catch is symmetrical, because enemy Cannons also hit for 100% extra. That trade rewards clean play, so if you can dodge incoming shots you keep all of the upside and take almost none of the risk.
Racer Ruth gives a 50% speed boost while your Nitro is active in exchange for slower normal driving. Escaping a losing fight, breaking an enemy firing line, or repositioning becomes trivial when you boost, and the reduced base speed barely matters if you keep Nitro flowing. Speed is one of the most valuable stats in the game, which lifts her to the top.
Empress spawns 100% more friendly Units at the cost of 20% Speed. A doubled army carries late-game automated builds and screens your castle from damage. The speed penalty is real, but you can offset it through modules and artifacts, so the ceiling here is very high.
A-tier Captains
The Count heals by consuming Units, which turns every villager and enemy into a health pickup and every rival castle into a chunk of sustain. The downside is that no health boxes spawn, so passive play punishes you hard. Aggression becomes your defense, and once your maximum HP snowballs, chip damage stops mattering.
Tankbert gains maximum HP each time he destroys a vehicle, at the cost of 50% less Nitro regeneration. For a defensive, grind-everything build he is close to S-tier. The weaker Nitro means fewer boosts and dashes, which is the only thing holding him back.
Huntress raises Auto Attack Speed by 50% but adds 50% to your Ability Cooldowns. She trades one strength for another, which makes her ideal if your build leans on constant basic attacks rather than timed actives.
Pyromaniac ignites any enemy he touches, which is a punishing area threat in the right hands. The problem is that he removes your luck entirely, so any RNG-based upside disappears. Strong ability, real cost.

B-tier Captains
Norbert The Normal has no special effect and no penalty. That makes him a stable, cheap platform for learning the driving loop or testing new module combinations, and at 1,000 Silver he is the easiest Captain to unlock.
Lumberjack lets you refill Nitro by consuming trees but slows your normal Nitro regeneration significantly. Trading a reliable resource for a situational one is a weak deal in the grasslands, though it may improve as more biomes and vehicles arrive.
Dieter The Drunk grants a flat 50% more damage in exchange for wobbly, unpredictable handling. The damage is tempting, but the loose controls fight you, so he suits players who like managing chaos and steering by feel.
Kapitalistus Maximus gives 40% more Gold after a run but 20% less during it. Since in-run Gold is what fuels your upgrades, the up-front loss usually outweighs the post-run bonus, which keeps him from ranking higher.
C-tier Captains
Time Witch runs the entire game at double speed, which is both her effect and her tradeoff. Everything happens faster, including the enemies, so reaction windows shrink and mistakes compound quickly. She is fun for a rush, but not a reliable pick.
Sire Jonah plays techno music and nothing more. With no in-game effect, he sits at the bottom for anyone who wants a Captain that actually changes how a run plays.

Captain effects and unlock costs
| Captain | Effect | Tradeoff | Unlock (Silver) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patchy The Pirate | Cannons deal 100% extra damage | Enemy Cannons deal 100% extra damage | 3,000 |
| Racer Ruth | +50% Speed while boosting | Reduced normal driving Speed | 4,000 |
| Empress | Spawn 100% more friendly Units | -20% Speed | 10,000 |
| The Count | Heal by consuming Units | No Health boxes spawn | 4,000 |
| Tankbert | Gain max HP per destroyed vehicle | -50% Nitro regeneration | 4,000 |
| Huntress | +50% Auto Attack Speed | +50% Ability Cooldown | 10,000 |
| Pyromaniac | Ignites enemies on contact | Removes luck entirely | — |
| Norbert The Normal | No bonuses | None | 1,000 |
| Lumberjack | Consuming Trees grants Nitro | Much slower Nitro regeneration | 4,000 |
| Dieter The Drunk | +50% damage | Wobbly vehicle controls | 15,000 |
| Kapitalistus Maximus | +40% Gold after a run | -20% Gold during a run | 10,000 |
| Time Witch | Game runs twice as fast | Game runs twice as fast | 15,000 |
| Sire Jonah | Plays techno music | No gameplay effect | — |
If you are just starting out, Patchy The Pirate is the cheapest way into the S-tier at 3,000 Silver, while Norbert The Normal at 1,000 is the safest sandbox for learning to drive. The Duelist remains the one open slot on the roster, and its placement will firm up once its passive has been tested across full runs.
