Valheim Deep North: Every New Creature and What It Drops

Where each Deep North creature spawns and the exact materials, trophies, and moulds it leaves behind.

Where each Deep North creature spawns and the exact materials, trophies, and moulds it leaves behind.

The Deep North biome fills Valheim’s frozen edge with a fresh roster of animals, monsters, and Jotun enemies, and almost every one of them exists to hand you a specific crafting material. Knowing what drops where saves you from grinding the wrong enemy for a mould or resource you actually need somewhere else.

Quick answer: Seal, Moose, Barka, and Gammeltroll roam the open Deep North; Elaking, Eyeless One, and Luminous Larvae live inside the Winding Tunnels; Hexen, Krigen, and Shapeless Pulp appear in Mörkhalla. Most drop a signature material plus a trophy, and several drop armor moulds.

Coastal and overworld creatures

Seals are usually the first new creature you meet, gathered along the ocean coast at the edge of the Deep North. Adults drop Seal Pelt and Seal Blubber, and they are weak to fire damage. Seal Pelt feeds into weapons, apparel, and the Moose Saddle, while Seal Blubber goes into food recipes. Baby Seals drop nothing, so there is no reason to hunt them.

Moose wander the forests and around abandoned villages. They hit extremely hard with their kicks and are also weak to fire, but you can tame one by feeding it Lingonberries and then ride it with a Moose Saddle. Killing a Moose yields Moose Meat, Moose Hide, and Moose Sinew, which are used across new armor recipes and the Spirit Caller staff.

Barka are tall, tree-like enemies that resemble The Elder but are thinner and coated in snow, which lets them blend into the timber forests. Their long arms give them dangerous reach, and their ice attacks apply a frostburn effect. They are weak to fire and reliably drop Frozen Branch, a key ingredient for magical gear like the Spirit Caller.

Gammeltroll are massive frost trolls with stone-like bodies that resist incoming damage, so bring your strongest weapons and armor. When defeated, a Gammeltroll petrifies in place. Mine the remains with an Ember Charge to collect Petrified Tissue, which converts into Bloodgold at a Blast Furnace or Black Forge, the ingot behind new Nord weapons and armor.

Winding Tunnels creatures

The Winding Tunnels sit beneath the longhouse in each large abandoned village, and only a few creatures live inside them.

Elaking are the most common enemy here and grow far more aggressive at night, often lurking in packs. They spawn from Wardrobe Shafts and take increased fire damage. Their drops include Elaking Hair Bundle, used in several Deep North armor sets, plus the Mould: Intricate Key needed to craft the Intricate Key that opens Mörkhalla.

Eyeless One is an ogre-like humanoid that burrows underground and erupts to ambush you, dealing heavy claw damage. With Elaking swarming the same corridors, the fight can turn fatal quickly. It drops Long Claws, the material required to craft the Nord Knucklechains fist weapon.

Luminous Larvae are harmless glowing critters clinging to the tunnel walls. They chirp as you approach, making them easy to find. Picking one up unlocks the Hooded Lantern recipe, a new lighting decoration.

Mörkhalla and Jotun enemies

Mörkhalla is the second Deep North dungeon and home to the toughest new foes. You reach it with the Grappling Hook and open its inner door with an Intricate Key.

Hexen are floating Jotun mages that blink away, levitate out of melee range, and cast spells that knock you back on impact. Crossbows, bows, and throwables are the reliable answer. After you first encounter them in Mörkhalla, they begin appearing in the overworld too. They drop Nornathread and the Caller set moulds, covering the Robes, Headdress, and Trousers of the Caller.

Krigen are heavily armed Jotun warriors that resemble Draugr but hit much harder, striking with blades and charging headbutts. They also spawn during Jotun invasions after you break Malicious Ice. A defeated Krigen can drop Leather Straps, Memorial Coal, and the Vanguard set moulds for the Chestpiece, Hood, and Trousers of the Vanguard, one of the strongest armor sets in the game.

Shapeless Pulp are slimy blob creatures found in Mörkhalla. They are immune to poison but easy to kill, and they drop Dead Pulp and Tiny Pulp along with the Pulp Trophy.

Rare drops such as moulds no longer require killing endless enemies to appear, since the 1.0 update reworked how rare drops roll. Note that the Deep North also holds the update’s final boss at the Aesir Passage, which is tracked separately from these standard creatures.
