Holding the books does nothing on its own. Manuals only convert into ranks at a Shrine, and each rank still costs Skill Points earned from levelling up and from quest rewards.

Merchant inventories are partly randomised between playthroughs and between visits. If a vendor’s list does not show the book, leave, pass some time, and check again rather than assuming that vendor never stocks it.

Buying from Mevasser in Svartrau City

Travel into Svartrau City and make your way to the Neustadt district. Mevasser trades from a shop tucked away inside the city rather than from an open market stall, so follow the interior doorway rather than looking for a street vendor icon.

Speak to Mevasser and work through the opening conversation. The trade menu only opens after you choose the option asking to see what he has, phrased in-game as “Show me your collection.”

Fixed world and quest locations

Three spots hand over a copy without spending gold. These are set locations, so they are worth clearing before you start paying vendor prices.

Clear every room in the castle during that quest rather than only the objective room. The manual sits in ordinary lootable containers, and the area is not designed to be revisited freely afterwards.

Farming extra copies from open-world activities

Witchcraft manuals also drop at random from repeatable world content, which is the fallback when a vendor’s stock refuses to cooperate. Ancient Circles, Will-o-the-Wisps and Haunted Sites all pay out Witchcraft books, and chests at the top of Scouting Towers do the same. Monster caves, nests and lairs add another pool, and defeated enemies can drop manuals as ordinary loot.

There is no hard limit on how many manuals exist in a save, and the world contains far more than the number needed to max every skill. Clearing these markers as you pass them usually fills the last rank before you have to grind deliberately.

Turning the manuals into Cycle of Ruin 4/4

Travel to any Shrine and interact with it to open the development tree. Manuals cannot be applied from the inventory screen.

Open the Witchcraft tree and select Cycle of Ruin. Owning at least one manual makes the ability selectable instead of greyed out.

Spend Skill Points to buy each rank. Every rank consumes one manual alongside the point cost, so four books plus four confirmations brings the counter to 4/4.

You will know it worked when the ability node shows all four pips filled and the manuals disappear from your inventory. If the node stays locked, the usual causes are having zero copies on hand, sitting on too few Skill Points, or standing away from a Shrine.

Because the Matriarch is gated behind a two-quest chain and the Sanzhana Merchant needs Pearly and Precious finished, players who rush the ability early will usually lean on Mevasser plus the Howling Keep copy and top up the rest through Ancient Circles. Anyone taking the exploration route will often hit 4/4 without buying a single book.
