Is Aniimo a Gacha Game? How Its Monetization Works

Aniimo skips randomized pulls for open-world capture, leaning on a battle pass, a monthly pass, and cosmetics instead.

Aniimo is a free-to-play, open-world creature collector from Pawprint Studio, and its business model has drawn close attention because free-to-play often signals a gacha structure. It does not use one. Creatures are caught through play, not pulled from banners, and the paid layer sits around that loop rather than inside it.

Quick answer: No, Aniimo is not a gacha game. Every creature can be captured in the open world, and real money mainly buys a battle pass, a monthly pass, and cosmetics.

How you collect Aniimo without paying

Aniimo creatures live in the open world across the planet Idyll. You find them in the field, weaken them in combat, and then throw an Aniipod to catch them. There is no banner and no pull system, so building a roster comes down to exploration and battling rather than spending premium currency.

Once a creature is yours, you can “Twine” with it, morphing into the Aniimo to use its abilities for combat, traversal, and puzzle solving. That system is unlocked through normal progression, not a purchase. Pawprint has stated plainly that capturing creatures will not be locked behind a gacha system, and that there will be no Aniimo sold in the store.

The developers have said they want a free path to improve captured Aniimo, including pushing them toward an “ideal” version, after earlier testers felt perfecting creatures was too hard. The stated goal is no pay-to-win and no pay-to-progress.

What costs real money in Aniimo

As a free title, Aniimo still needs revenue, and it collects it through a handful of familiar systems. None of them sell creatures directly, but a few can put a specific pet behind a paywall for a limited time.

Companion Handbook battle pass

The Companion Handbook is Aniimo’s battle pass. You level it by earning EXP, and it splits into a free track and a premium track, with progression running across roughly 80 levels and upgrade paths such as the Advanced and Collector’s editions. The premium track is the one to watch, because it can grant an upgraded version of a creature that is only obtainable by buying the pass.

For instance, a season’s premium track might award the Prismana Fulmintis pet. During that season, the pass is the only way to get it. Once the season ends, the creature becomes catchable for everyone in the open world, so the exclusivity is temporary rather than permanent.

Monthly Pass

The Monthly Pass is a paid subscription-style item. It costs real money and pays out a set amount of premium currency every day for a month, delivering both Lumin Crystals and Glimmer. If you have used Welkin-style monthly passes in other live-service games, this works the same way.

You activate it from the Common Item inventory. Open the pass entry, then use it to start the daily payouts, which also apply bonuses like reduced hatching time while the pass is active.

Character and pet cosmetics

Cosmetics are the core of the paid model. Outfits and accessories for your playable character and your pets are bought with Lumin Crystals, and both the male and female protagonists have their own skins in the Appearance section. Prices vary from item to item, and options include looks such as Razor Edge, Silent Owl Spirit, and Frostburst Punk.

Sparkling Cubes and the Item Shop

The Item Shop sells Sparkling Cubes, which hatch any creature you already own into its shiny variant. Buying them is optional, because a Sparkling Cube can also be earned through Elite Training, the Fun Stamp Collection Shop, the Companion Handbook, in-game shops, and item exchanges.

Lumin Crystals and Glimmer explained

Two currencies sit at the center of the paid layer. Both arrive through the Monthly Pass, and Lumin Crystals are the ones tied directly to the cosmetic shop.

CurrencyHow you get itWhat it buys
Lumin CrystalsMonthly Pass; real-money purchaseCharacter and pet cosmetics, Item Shop goods
GlimmerMonthly Pass; pre-registration rewardsPremium currency, with a cosmetic focus

Glimmer is confirmed as a premium currency, and its full list of uses points toward the cosmetic side of the store rather than progression. Whether any gameplay items such as boosters or crafting materials appear alongside cosmetics is not yet confirmed.

Why some players still expect gacha

The skepticism is understandable, and a few points keep it alive. Glimmer exists as a premium currency, and premium currencies in free-to-play games usually raise questions about what they eventually unlock. The complete storefront has not been fully shown either, so the final picture of what is for sale remains open.

None of that makes Aniimo a gacha game today. Creatures are captured in the world, the store is built around cosmetics and passes, and the developers have repeatedly ruled out selling Aniimo through pulls. The model most closely resembles cosmetic-driven collectors rather than banner-based ones, and it is worth checking again once the full shop is live. Aniimo is planned to launch in Q3 2026 for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, iOS, and Android.
