The flashlight in Silent Hill: Townfall arrives in two pieces, and neither one is handed to you. The body of it sits in a drawer downstairs in Zoe’s House, the batteries are in a drawer upstairs, and the game expects you to work out that they belong together. Until you do, dark rooms stay dark, and a few clues and items tucked into unlit corners will slip right past you.

Quick answer: Take the Flashlight (No Batteries) from the kitchen drawer beside the washing machine in Zoe’s House, then grab the AA Batteries from the drawer upstairs and combine the two in your inventory.

Flashlight and AA Batteries location in Zoe’s House

Both halves live in the same building, in the Shorefront district of St. Amelia. You reach it after escaping the Otherworld and coming back out into the town square, and the front door is already unlocked, so no key hunting is involved.

The downstairs drawer is in the utility corner of the kitchen, close to the organ transport container you’ll be told to open later. The upstairs room is cluttered and doubles as storage, with a mattress on the floor and a small wooden nightstand beside it. That nightstand is the one you want.

How to get the flashlight working

Head into Zoe’s House from the town square and walk through to the kitchen. Look for the drawer beside the washing machine and press the on-screen prompt to open it.

Collect the item. It goes into your inventory as Flashlight (No Batteries), described as a small pocket flashlight that needs batteries. It cannot be equipped in this state.

Retrace the hallway, use the interior staircase, and go into the room on the left. Search the small nightstand beside the mattress and take the AA Batteries from its drawer; they are listed as two AA batteries used to power devices. The Combining Items tutorial displays when you collect them for the first time.

From the inventory, select the Key Items tab. Highlight the AA Batteries, press X on PlayStation or A on Xbox, then choose Combine from the action list.

Select the Flashlight (No Batteries) as the second item. The two merge into a single new item, and you can close the menu.

If the item flashes red instead of merging, the pairing was rejected. That is the game’s signal for an invalid combination, so check you selected the flashlight and not another Key Item.

How to confirm it worked and turn the light on

A successful combination shows you the new item immediately and drops it into your inventory. Open the Equipment tab and you should see a plain Flashlight entry described as a small wearable flashlight. The old “No Batteries” version and the AA Batteries are both gone from Key Items.

From there, click in the right stick (R3) at any point to switch the beam on or off. There’s no equip step and no separate menu toggle.

Flashlight rules: batteries, visibility, and difficulty

  • The flashlight is permanent once assembled. You never have to find replacement batteries.
  • On standard difficulty settings, enemies cannot see the beam.
  • On Nightmare difficulty, the light can give away your position to nearby enemies.
  • It’s an exploration tool as much as a safety net, useful for spotting clues and items that are otherwise lost in shadow.

Worth doing before you move on with the objective you’ll have on screen at this point, which is opening the organ transplant box. There’s more to find in Zoe’s House than the ground floor suggests, and some of it only reads properly with the beam pointed at it.
