A Rogue’s Deal Quest Guide for World of Warcraft (Tirisfal Glades)

A Rogue’s Deal is one of the earliest Horde quests a Forsaken character can pick up, and it is a plain courier job wrapped around a small con. Calvin Montague hands you a sealed letter in Deathknell, promises to pay you well for carrying it, and points you northeast toward the town of Brill. The delivery itself is quick. Getting paid is the part that takes a second trip.

Quick answer: Take the Nondescript Letter from Calvin Montague in Deathknell, follow the road northeast to Brill, and hand it to Innkeeper Renee inside Gallows’ End Tavern.

A Rogue’s Deal quest requirements and start location

Everything happens inside Tirisfal Glades, so there is no travel outside the starting zone. Calvin Montague stands near the road out of Deathknell at roughly 38, 57, and the quest has no prerequisite beyond being level 1 and Horde.

The Nondescript Letter is placed in your bags when you accept, so there is nothing to farm, loot, or kill for the objective. You cannot share the quest with party members, and each player has to speak to Calvin individually.

Route from Deathknell to Innkeeper Renee in Brill

Talk to Calvin Montague on the outskirts of Deathknell and accept the quest. He will complain about zombies and spiders, then hand over the letter meant for an innkeeper he only half remembers as “Renee something-or-other.”

Leave Deathknell and follow the road. It splits twice shortly after you exit, and you want the right-hand fork both times. The path keeps you on paved ground the whole way, which matters at low level because the surrounding hills are full of hostile mobs.

Continue past Cold Hearth Manor and cross the covered bridge. Brill sits just beyond it, northeast of Deathknell, and you will recognize it by the cluster of buildings and the Deathguards posted on the steps.

Head for Gallows’ End Tavern, the inn building in the middle of town. You will pass Executor Zygand and the Deathguards stationed outside before reaching the entrance.

Speak to Innkeeper Renee behind the counter, at roughly 62, 52, and hand over the letter. She greets you cheerfully, claims she has been waiting to hear from her mother in Deathknell, then drops the act and tells you to get lost. The quest completes the moment you close that dialogue.

Collecting the payment: the Calvin Montague duel

Delivering the letter pays no coin at all, despite Calvin’s promise. Return to him in Deathknell after the turn-in and he denies owing you anything, denies the letter existed, and offers a second quest with the same name. The objective is simply to defeat him.

The fight is a duel-style scuffle rather than a real death match. Calvin surrenders once you have beaten him down, and only then does he pay up. Finish it in the same trip, because there is no reason to leave the follow-up sitting in your log.

The item choice is the only decision here, and it comes down to whether your class burns through health or mana at low level. Refreshing Spring Water restores mana for casters, while Forest Mushroom Cap is food for health regeneration. Both stacks are consumed quickly in the level 5 to 10 range, so pick the one that matches your downtime.

How to verify both quests are completed

Because the two quests share a name, the log alone can be confusing. Run these macros in chat to confirm each half separately. A result of true means that quest is flagged complete on your character.

Quest ID 8 is the letter delivery to Renee, and 590 is the duel with Calvin. If the first returns true and the second returns false, head back to Deathknell and pick up the rematch.

Which versions still have A Rogue’s Deal

The quest chain was cut from the live game in patch 4.0.3a when Cataclysm rebuilt the Tirisfal Glades starting experience, and it is marked obsolete on modern realms. It remains intact in World of Warcraft Classic, where it was reintroduced in patch 1.13.2.

Both halves together take a few minutes and slot neatly into the run every Forsaken character makes toward Brill anyway. Set your hearthstone at Gallows’ End Tavern while you are standing in front of Renee, and the trip pays for itself regardless of what Calvin owes you.
