Beating a Resonant in Control Resonant pulls Dylan into the Gap, the dreamlike build space where the skill trees, Aberrant weapon forms and Talent pedestals live. Spend your points, pick your new power, and then comes the part that traps people: there is no visible door, no exit prompt, and the one interactive object in the room sends you straight back into the fog with the boss respawning.
Quick answer: Press Left on the D-pad while you are standing inside the Gap. That fires the exit cutscene and drops Dylan back into the world. The monolith portal only loops you between rooms.
Why the monolith portal keeps looping you back
The Gap you enter after a boss kill is a dark room lined with glowing pedestals. Each one opens a different menu, and none of them contains a way out. The Primary Forms tree shows nodes like Cleave with its damage, Falter and Crit Chance values, and a separate pedestal handles Ability Strength. You can run laps around the space and never find a marked exit, because there isn’t one.

The obvious candidate is the tall glowing monolith with the L1 prompt on it, since that is what brought you here. Using it does move you, but only sideways. You land back in the foggy arena where you fought the Resonant, and the enemy is already coming back.

Hit L1 on the monolith again to escape the respawning enemy and you are back in the upgrade room, exactly where you started. That is the whole loop, and it is why the area feels like a soft lock. Neither end of the teleport is the exit.

Note that Left is only the way out. The Gap is opened with Down on the directional pad outside of combat, which Remedy has described both as a press and as a hold, so try both if one does nothing. On keyboard, holding G opens it.
| Action | Input |
|---|---|
| Open the Gap (outside combat) | D-pad Down, or hold G |
| Leave the Gap | D-pad Left |
| Use the monolith portal | L1 |
How to confirm you actually left
The cutscene ends with Dylan back in the factory area and a radio exchange with Zoe about the person hiding in the tunnels. Right after that, the HUD confirms the exit worked with a Quest Completed: The Central Resonant banner, followed by two tutorial pop-ups titled Resonant Cycle and A World Changed.

The Central Resonant payout lands at the same time:
- +3000 Source
- +1 Reset Item
- Untapped Lighter
- CENTRAL 5 zone progress, +500
Settle your build before you press Left
Leaving is cheap, but undoing your spending afterwards is not. While you are still in the Gap during the current session, you can reset a tree and re-spend freely as many times as you like, and the Exchange Recents option refunds everything you just bought. The moment you step out, both of those free do-overs close.
After that, changing combat abilities, Aberrant forms or Talents costs a Reset Item. Those come from finishing Orientation and each Zone’s Resonant quest, or from vendors at 5000 Source apiece, with stock tied to your Zone Level. There is also no second saved loadout slot, so swapping setups means rebuilding them by hand rather than toggling a preset.
The Gap has a test arena. Try the loadout there before you exit, not after, while resets are still free.
What the Resonant Cycle changes once you are out
Exiting does more than close a quest. Each Resonant you defeat starts a new Resonant Cycle, and the world reshuffles around it. Most enemy encounters come back tougher and bring new enemy types, and every Zone’s World Feats refresh.
The trade is a better economy. Resource drops improve in both quality and quantity, and some activities pay out more to match the raised difficulty. It is worth knowing that the pressure steps up the instant that cutscene ends, so leave the Gap with the build you actually want to fight with.
Once you are back in the world, the Gap is still available on demand outside combat with Down on the D-pad, and travel in and out is near-instant. Left on the D-pad remains the way back out, so the post-boss loop only catches you once.
