Genshin Impact 7.1, “A Rekviem for the Underworld,” launched on September 23, 2026, and it finally puts two cosmic authorities in the same room. One of them is Ronova, the Ruler of Death. The other is Rhinedottir — the Khaenri’ahn alchemist better known as “Gold,” who walks into the middle of a Snezhnayan crisis wearing a white and gold hooded gown and a new title.
Quick answer: Rhinedottir is Khaenri’ah’s master alchemist “Gold,” now fused with Naberius and acting as the Ruler of Life. In 7.1 she appears in Chapter VII Act IV to reclaim the life power Vesna borrowed.

Rhinedottir’s appearance in Chapter VII Act IV
The act opens in Snezhnaya rather than Khaenri’ah. A Mora coin gets flipped across a table, a brief scuffle follows, and the Traveler is eventually escorted into the grand hall of the Zapolyarny Palace, where the Fatui Harbingers are assembled in front of the Cryo Archon, Anastasya Feodorovna Snezhnaya. Pierro is among them.
From there the chapter moves into an arena fight against a colossal golden winged construct. Pantalone triggers the hall’s ceiling-mounted turrets, the Traveler goes in with a sword, and Vesna channels power through her staff — sprouting glowing wings and forcing the machine down. The beast reassembles anyway, and the Tsaritsa ends the fight herself, freezing it with a spectral ice bird and shattering it.
Rhinedottir arrives right after that, introduced on a title card as the Ruler of Life. She is not there for the monster. She is there for Vesna.
Why Rhinedottir takes Vesna’s power
Vesna is the youngest Commander in Druzhna history and a Vila, and the magic she uses in the arena is not entirely her own. Pantalone warns her mid-fight about borrowing too much of it, and she explains that the power comes from an ancestral contract. That contract traces back to Rhinedottir.
When Rhinedottir steps onto the floor, she demands the return of what was lent. She pulls a glowing orb of life essence out of Vesna’s chest, leaving the commander drained and barely able to stand while Paimon rushes to help her.
She holds the reclaimed energy in her open palm and calls the arrangement a grave transgression, then muses on human futility as the golden light disperses through the hall and out across the snowbound city. The Traveler demands to know what she actually wants, and the answer is left hanging over the rest of the act.
Her presence also frames the act’s Khaenri’ah flashback. It is Rhinedottir who remarks that the Universitas could not stop fawning over Hroptatyr, and that Eftirvit envied him for the office he never received — the two scholars whose story plays out in the illustrated storybook sequence around Professor Mimameith.
Ruler of Life: How Rhinedottir and Naberius are connected
Rhinedottir did not inherit the title. She took it. While exploring deep domains with Albedo, she found the Heart of Naberius and devoured it, merging with the Shade and absorbing its function. Naberius lost its agency in the process, and Rhinedottir has served as the Ruler of Life ever since.
Naberius is still in there, though. The Teyvat Chapter Interlude Teaser: The Gods’ Limit showed how the arrangement works — Rhinedottir is the one acting, while Naberius can only comment. You can tell them apart by halo color. Gold is Rhinedottir, blue is Naberius.
That makes her one of the Four Shades of the Heavenly Principles, also called the Four Great Rulers:

Rhinedottir is on speaking terms with nearly all of them, and she attends meetings involving the Shades as Naberius’s vessel. Ronova has even commented on being able to distinguish Naberius’s handiwork from Rhinedottir’s while surveying the world below.
Rhinedottir before the merge: Gold, the Khaenri’ahn alchemist
Everything that makes her dangerous in 7.1 predates the title. She carries several names, and each one points at a different part of her influence over Teyvat.

The Art of Khemia and the Five Sinners
Rhinedottir came from Khaenri’ah and practiced the Art of Khemia, the branch of alchemy built around creating life from nothing — a necessity in a subterranean kingdom with almost no natural flora or fauna. She served the Eclipse Dynasty in its final years and pushed the science further than anyone else, which is where “Gold” comes from.
Dainsleif places her among Khaenri’ah’s five Sinners, together with Vedrfolnir, Hroptatyr, Surtalogi, and Rerir. Their manipulation of Abyssal power five hundred years ago set off the Cataclysm, sending their creations throughout the seven nations. Skirk learned about Rhinedottir through her own master, Surtalogi, and says Rhinedottir is pursuing a kind of perfection.
Rhinedottir’s creations
She sorted her creations into pedigrees named after types of soil, with chalk rated highest. Many of them developed wills of their own, and her creations are implied to draw on the Ruler of Life’s power, which grants them a degree of immortality.

After consuming Naberius she vanished, leaving Albedo a note, a recommendation letter to her longtime friend Alice, and a final assignment: find the truth and meaning of this world.
The Tsaritsa’s Gnosis plan and the bounds of Reason
Act IV also answers the question players have been asking since Mondstadt — what the Gnoses were actually for. A flashback shows Rhinedottir sitting across a frozen banquet table from the Tsaritsa, with all six collected Gnoses laid out between them.
The Cryo Archon gathered them to amplify her own power and push against the bounds of Reason, slowing time itself. The target of that countermeasure is Rhinedottir. That reframes the whole Snezhnayan campaign: the Tsaritsa is not only preparing to fight the Heavenly Principles, she is preparing for the Ruler of Life.
Is Rhinedottir playable in Genshin Impact 7.1?
No. Rhinedottir is currently only a story character, and no details have been announced about her element, weapon, or release date. Version 7.1 adds Vesna, a 5-star Anemo sword user, and Vodyanitsa, a 5-star Hydro catalyst user; Skirk and Escoffier appear again during phase two.
The fight in 7.1 is against the other ruler. Ronova, the Ruler of Death, is the climactic battle the Traveler joins alongside Dainsleif and Snezhnaya, and she becomes a permanent Weekly Trounce Boss afterward. Completing the Archon Quest pays out 620 Primogems and unlocks the anniversary’s free event-exclusive 5-star selector.
Rhinedottir leaves Act IV without committing to a side. She takes back what belongs to her, delivers a verdict on mortal ambition, and walks out of a room where the Tsaritsa, Pierro, and the authority over death are all pointed at each other. Whatever she is building toward, 7.1 only confirms that she now has the power of life itself to build it with.
