Luma Island is a cozy exploration and farming game for one to four players, built around a rundown farm, a mysterious island, and a cast of magical creatures called Lumas. It has been on PC through Steam since 20 November 2024, and it is now set to expand to consoles with cross-platform play.

What Luma Island is
You move to Luma Island after leaving an office job, buying Old Man Jeffrey’s farm and caravan. From there you clear land, plant crops, mine, fish, chop wood, and craft the machines and tools you need. An earthquake early on damages the nearby village, and helping rebuild it pushes the wider story forward.
The game is developed and published by Feel Free Games, a small studio based in the Netherlands. It won the Dutch Game Awards 2025 in the Best Debut Game category. The world is fully 3D and colorful rather than pixel art, with a free-moving camera that keeps your character highlighted even behind structures.
Two of the game’s defining choices set it apart from many farming sims. There is no stamina bar, so you never manage energy or need to sleep, and storage is unlimited, so you can pick up everything without juggling inventory space. Crafting machines and upgrade stations pull automatically from what you have stored.
Where you can play Luma Island
Right now, the game runs on Windows PC through Steam, and it is Steam Deck Verified. It supports controllers, Steam Cloud saves, Family Sharing, and includes 120 Steam achievements. The interface and subtitles are offered in 16 languages, including English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and Dutch.
The console version is the headline for what’s next. Feel Free Games has confirmed a cross-platform co-op release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, letting players on different systems explore together. You can already wishlist it on PlayStation and Xbox, and buy the PC edition on Steam.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S still have no announced launch date or time. Using online functions, including cloud saves and cross-play, calls for both a platform account and an internet connection.
Cozy, Adventure, and Hero modes
You pick a difficulty that matches how much combat you want. Enemies such as large spiders and, later, skeletons appear in the world, and you fight them with a whip. If you are afraid of spiders, you can turn that off.
- Cozy Mode: no combat unless you start it; enemies leave you alone.
- Adventure Mode: a balanced mix of challenge and relaxation.
- Hero Mode: stronger enemies for a harder run.
There are no timed quests and no clock pressuring you, so you can play as slowly or quickly as you like. A full-screen map guides exploration.
Lumas and Luma Energy
Lumas are the magical companions at the center of the game. You find Mysterious Eggs in Golden Chests hidden across the island, then hatch them in a Luma Incubator using an egg and one Luma Life. Which Luma comes out of each chest is random, so hatching stays a surprise.
Each Luma has a unique ability and helps you locate buried treasure. When one is near a hidden chest, it makes a sound, runs to the spot, and triggers a “Dig” prompt. They also produce Luma Energy, a resource you need for crafting no matter which profession you chose. Petting a Luma gives one Luma Energy per day, and feeding works similarly, with Super Luma Food removing the daily limit.
After repairing the Pet Shop, spend 20,000 in-game money on duplicate eggs, or 10,000 each on cats and dogs. Like Lumas, cats and dogs can locate treasure, but they cannot generate Luma Energy. After you purchase the Treasure Hunter permit, Captain Quincy will give you one dog at no cost.
Professions and progression
You choose a profession to earn money and unlock recipes. Your first profession is free, and buying additional ones costs money that climbs each time. Options include Cook, Brewer, Treasure Hunter, Blacksmith, Fisherman, Jewelrycrafter, and Archaeologist. Each has its own questline and recipes, and the crafted goods are mainly there to sell in town.
Progress comes from completing quests, leveling professions, and upgrading tools. The axe, pickaxe, hoe, fishing rod, and whip can all be upgraded, with the watering can as the exception. A tool upgrades five times within a tier, then jumps to the next tier, and higher levels improve resource drops.
Fast travel skips the shiny platforms other sims use. You hop on a bike at your farm to warp to a location, and you ride one back from town. Everlasting seeds are a handy early find, since you sow them once and they regrow after every harvest.
The Pirates update
A major free update called Pirates arrived on 20 June 2025, and it is now the default way to start the game. It adds a pirate cove as a fifth hub area, connected to the other zones with fresh quests and minigames, along with new Lumas, a new profession, and quality-of-life fixes. Skeletons to fight and pirate-themed puzzles also come with it.
The current Steam edition bundles the original game and the expanded Pirates content together, so a new purchase includes both.
Co-op multiplayer
Drop-in, drop-out online co-op supports a maximum of four players exploring together. Resources are shared, challenges can be handled together, and construction happens side by side. On PC, entering another player’s game requires a fresh character; that character remains linked to the host’s world instead of your own save.
Price and system requirements
The base price is US $19.99 (UK £15.99, EU €19,99). A week-long deal currently cuts it 40% to $11.99, with the offer ending September 28. A Dave the Diver bundle is also sold at a discount, and the game’s soundtrack is available as free downloadable content.

DirectX 11 and a broadband connection are required for both tiers. Once you own it, launch it through Steam and pick Cozy, Adventure, or Hero mode to start on the farm. For consoles, the next confirmed step is wishlisting on PlayStation or Xbox and waiting for a firm release date to be announced.
